Round 6: Flames Draft Forward Coda Gordon

Flames draft left winger Coda Gordon. (165th overall)

Some info:

Weight: 175
Height: 6' 0"
Born: August 4, 1994
Born in: Calgary, AB, CAN
Shoots: Left
Former/Current Team: Swift Current (WHL)

Quote:
2011-12: Gordon was the second-leading scorer for Swift Current as a rookie. Playing on a line with leading scorer Taylor Vause and Jets’ prospect Adam Lowry, Gordon scored 30 goals with 23 assists and was plus-two with 12 penalty minutes. The Broncos finished fifth in the East Division; missing the WHL Playoffs. Gordon was invited to the NHL Draft Combine and ranked 61st amongst North American skaters in Central Scouting’s final rankings prior to the 2012 NHL Draft.

Amazing pick. I had him rated as a late 2nd, early 3rd.

Quote:
#8 - Coda Gordon - Swift Current Broncos - LW -

Gordon is a goal scorer, through and through, scoring 30 goals as a rookie for a bad Broncos club. Owns a good frame, but is not nearly as physical as he could be. Still goes to the dirty areas of the ice and has very good finishing ability. Footspeed needs to improve as his stride is somewhat awkward and clunky, but with work it won't hold him back at the next level. Oozes hockey sense and is very good positionally. Can still use development in regards to playing in his own zone, but that's a common knock on someone coming off his first year in the CHL. I like him as a top 45 pick, but I doubt he goes that high.

NHL Style Comparable: Matt Moulson

Top End Potential: Top 6 Winger

Pick Prediction: Late 2nd, early 3rd round

53 points in 66 games isn't bad, 30 of those were goals.

I was furious not drafting TT but so far this has been a really well done draft by Calgary.

This one was the best so far.
WHL rookie that put up some great points, I expect him to among the league leaders next season. Hopefully.

I was stunned we didn't trade up for Forsberg but I have really liked this draft.

sounds like a good pick.

His 53 points in 66 games was also 2nd best on his team.

This and Kulak are my favorite picks of today. I am glad we got a guy like Sieloff, but perhaps we could of got a simlar dman like him in the 5th? I would of preffered we went for a forward in the 2nd. Like this pick alot though!

I Hate it! Why would we want a future top six winger that can score goals? We need bottom 6 plugs to simply occupy the ice for 7 minutes a game. What was Feaster thinking?

Wow you liking a few of our WHL picks is a great thing for us.

Plus, I personally like the Jankowski deal.

With Baerstchi, Granlund, Gaudreau, Reinhart, Ferland, Jankowski, Coda Gordon the Flames have some pretty good offensive prospects!

Yeah, agreed. We finally have a group of prospects that are skilled forwards, and not ones that are one-dimensional gritty type players.

I like the direction this team is going through.

I actually have some first hand info to contribute on this one. I think Coda was a great 6th round. I thought he'd go in the first 3/4 rounds for sure. He has great, and I do mean great speed. He also has a very nice release and a pretty good pair of hands. I'd say he was the best pure goal scorer for the Broncos last year and the third best player behind Vause and Lowry who are both older. He's also a very nice kid. He works in our youth center in Swift Current and helps out frequently as various minor hockey practices. Real good pick by our Flames management. Unlike the lunacy of passing on Teravainen.

Thanks for your perspective, but I completely disagree with your comments on his skating. He won the fastest skater competition for the Broncos. We have some decently fast guys too in Black, Vause and Lowry. He is sometimes a little soft, so you're on the mark there.

Thanks for the useful info! I'm very excited to see his development progress.

What player does he remind you of?

?????

His skating seems to be his biggest knock.

Everything I have heard is that he has good hockey sense/offensive skills but a really choppy and below average skating stride.

He has the most important parts, skating can be improved.
