Bates, Telepin and Williams had been with the Blue Jackets since before they took the ice for their inaugural season in 2000-01.
should make the firings sound like a good move to most on here even if it was a Howson move.

Porty reported that Williams was very involved in the drafting of Murray and RyJo. Interesting.

However, any changes to the scouting department gets a stamp of approval from me.

Agreed, as long as they are improvements, and not further detractions.

So they waited until AFTER the draft to do this?

Seriously though, it is shocking that these guys have been around that long.

You still need some guys to shuffle papers around. Possibly their major responsibilities ended earlier but they were allowed to at least be around for the draft.

Even though it sucks on a personal level, I think the last thing you want is your scouts being picked up by a rival as a 'consultant' just before the draft. So, getting the pink slip right after the draft is unfortunately probably the best way to do it. My guess is that they suspected it was coming seeing as their contracts were expiring July 1st (I think) and they hadn't been renewed.

It's not as callous as you might think. Minus notable exceptions like Hakan Andersson, the majority of scout contracts are signed/expire at the Draft, and run for one year only. Scouts know- and especially these guys, having been in the business for 25+ years apiece- that you essentially work the Draft unsure if your job will be there at the end of Round 7. But you do it anyway because you put in 150+ games and hundreds of miles on the odometer for those 48 hours.

That they were given severance packages is actually a really great thing. You might think that's a given due to years of service... but Kevin Prendergast was fired in a hotel lobby. It's, after all, a business.

I figure when so many were kept out of the pre-draft preparations many had to know this was coming. Particularly if the guys they were promoting kept going bust.

If they fired four and the article says they will hire three this summer, something tells me either Prospal will move into a scouting role after next season or Clark will move into one with Prospal taking his place as Development Coach.

I'd be highly surprised if more than one guy hired had any sort of substantial experience though.... I figure it will be some greenies.

Sure, because all of their recent hires have been green: Patrick, Richards, Hartburg, Acton...

We'll see.... Scouting is a bit of a different breed. I didn't mean greenies as primarily an insult, being on the road for weeks at a time, away from family/friends, perhaps I should have said "less entrenched"

+1

Something is going on, whether it's Craig Patrick's influence or not, we hopefully will see some improvement next season.

You may say I'm a dreamer...

In fact, I wouldn't be too surprised if we see a situation similar to what happened with the Reds a few years ago. Bob Castellini brought in Walt Jocketty as a special adviser to the organization. Not much later, GM Wayne Krivsky* was let go.

Modin might make for a good scout too. I believe he's still in town.

I think there are about 10-15 former Jackets who have stayed in town after their playing careers ended.

Andrew Cassels, I believe, met his wife during his stint here. He is currently an assistant coach with Cincy in the ECHL....

Cassels would be able to give a thorough report on his son who is eligible for next years draft.

Cassels-who will be entering his second season as an assistant coach with the ECHL Cincinnati Cyclones- has relocated (or is in the process of doing so) to Cincinnati. He commuted last season from Columbus.

Personally, if possible, I'd like them to hire a couple of guys with real scouting experience and a history of some nice picks. Enough with building the organization with guys who helped establish the Jacket legacy.

Q: What do you call it when the CBJ fires 4 guys in hockey operations?
A: A good start.

For some reason, I can't help but think of Phil Hartman's scene in "Loaded Weapon 1". It involves him telling bad jokes in front of a brick wall while a standoff is going on, with his fellow cops just staring at him.
