I'd like to add, that if the Flames were to do something LIKE this in trading JBo, they better be sure they can sign a Wideman, etc to help fill the void left by Bouwmeester.
Jeff Schultz - 26 - 2,750,000 for two more seasons
2013 2nd
Patrick Wey
Rights to Wideman
You can't tell me Bouwmeester wouldn't be a massive upgrade on Schultz. You'd be getting that upgrade for less than $4 million more for two years.
Flames downgrade to Schultz, but recover a 2013 2nd, and get a project puckmoving NCAA d-man, who happens to be team mates with Johnny Gaudreau.
Caps ink Green and Carlson.
Green, Carlson, Bouwmeester, Alzner, Orlov
Pretty sweet group of D-men.
Pass wideman isn't the answer to how to become a better defensive team, Shultz is a solid bottom pairing defenseman but not going to be enough to replace Jbo.

I don't see a problem with this trade. I doubt we will sign the likes of Suter or Garrison.
Only concern is staying under the cap. Semin's contract was replaced with a (slightly) cheaper one in Ribeiro. Wideman hitting the market would save us close to $4mil. Knuble and Halpern combined saves almost $3mil. I don't see Green/Perreault/Beagle getting a huge raise from their current salaries; Carlson might get a decent (but not too big) raise. Still some wiggle room but it depends on whether we go after a winger for the short term until some kids are ready to step in.
I could be wrong but isn't Forsberg playing another year or two in Sweden before coming over?....so why would the Caps trade a center for a prospect who won't be ready for awhile and isn't a for sure NHLer.

What center prospect was being traded to the caps.
