What I noticed with Franson this year is he'd get put into the lineup and play great and Id wonder how this guy was ever a scratch. Then it almost seemed like he got too comfortable and he started playing a bit lazy and made some mistakes and then was back out of the lineup. If he can play the way he does when he's on his game more consistently then he could be a very solid top 4 dman for us.

It wouldnt surprise me if he is traded though.

To be honest I like franson and hope he isnt traded. I think he has a lot more to show, and if barbara underhill (sp?) is as good as ppl say she is, then I hope we give him a season with her.

He played some very sheltered minutes last season, but I thought he looked pretty good for the most part. I'll be interested to see how he does in a heightened role. He, Holzer, Komisarek and potentially Schultz will all be battling for those bottom two right-side positions. I wouldn't count Blacker out either.

Let him stay, raise his value, then deal him at TDL when Blacker/Holzer will be ready.

I really like Franson as a player, good puck mover and find a way to always gets shots on net, not like Phaneuf who shoots it 50 feet wide on a consistent basis.

I think if he is given regular consistent playing time he will be much better. It is extremely difficult to play a few games then have to sit for a few. Not good for confidence.

I have a feeling he might be moved, but I like the way he plays and hope we keep him. He just needs to get a bit more physical around our net, which he can do, and he will be a very good player.

I'm finding myself agreeing with most of this post.

According to Edmonton fans, he wouldn't even crack their lineup.

I like Franson, he's a good rusher and is good on the point. He's not afraid to make things happen. Plus he's got that towering size. As much as people saying there is no entitlement, it was a numbers game with Franson last year. Schenn and Komi had the big contracts so Cody had to sit. Plus he started using his size more.

With guys like Sutton, Petry, Potter, Peckham, Barker and Schultz frequenting their blue line, I don't think Franson would have too much trouble cracking their lineup.

I really like the player Franson is and could be. He's like...a carpenter who has almost all the tools to do the job but doesn't fully understand how to use them yet. He's seemingly starting to use his size and strength more and more as the last season progressed but with his size and strength, he's still gotta use it more.

Add that size + his offensive knack, he could be a very, very useful player.

I`ll tell ya the first thing about Oiler fans, the older ones are reasonable, the younger ones are silly.

Outside of Smid, Whitney - who`s had to step his game back because of his feet, and Petry (who`s actually a friggin rock) they dont have a lot of talent back there.

Franson would instantly become their top PP Specialist.

I'm excited to see Franson solidify a spot this year. With Schenn leaving, we need big physical D-men, and Franson, while playing more of an offensive game, seemed to up his physicality in the latter half of the season. I think in Carlyle's system, Franson will be asked to utilize his size a little more. I'd rather see him do it than Komi or Holzer. I like Holzer a lot, but he doesn't get Schenn's spot gift-wrapped to him after playing a total of 2 NHL games.

Similarly, I think it's premature to just assume that Schultz is going to come in and solidify a spot in the top 4. He's played exactly 0 NHL games. Anaheim may have valued him higher than Gardiner at one point, but they picked Gardiner in the 1st round and Shultz in the 2nd. Gardiner isn't exactly the same player he was a year and a half ago, either. I want Schultz to be a Leaf as much as the next guy, but to say that Schultz is automatically better than Gards, or somehow leap-frogs guys like Liles and Franson without playing a single game in the NHL is completely presumptuous.

People are putting Schultz in our top-4 without seeing him play a single game (or without us signing him yet). If we're just plugging names into prospective line-ups even before the pre-season, I'd put Franson's name before Schultz's.

I agree completely.

Franson is a part of what made Schenn expendable at this point.

There is no way people should be putting Schultz as a reason to deal Franson. We still need someone to play D next year!

Franson also still has lots of potential. I really like his ability to move the puck when he is on his game. We all know his shot.... and it really seemed it was trying to pick up his physical game last season.

As he matures into a 25-28 year old he could gain strength and really round out his game.

I think next year start like this as of now...

Gunnar - Phaneuf
Gardiner - Franson
Liles - Komi

Then we hopefully have Schultz challenging in camp... but in reality he will likely start in the AHL and get a call up with injuries, just as Holzer will.

Brian Burke has stated that he likes to have 8 NHL defenceman for a season to have sufficient depth and account for suspensions/injuries etc.

Given that the Leafs currently have 6 roster players who played substantially in the NHL last year, I find it hard to believe Franson is traded (unless for a different style NHL defenceman), even if Justin Schultz was to be acquired.

At this time last year, Toronto had the same number of defenceman, plus Schenn and Aulie. Depending on whether Schultz is signed, and whether management feels Holzer is ready, may determine if another defenceman is in fact, added.

A 7/8th defenseman can easily be acquired cheaply on July 1st.

Rome, Eminger and Hannan all decent bottom pairing guys if injuries pop up.

Petry played very well this season, he doesn't get enough love. He's an absolutely solid top four guy.

Franson played the most sheltered minutes of any defenceman on the Leafs this season, starting in the offensive zone more than average and playing almost exclusively against depth lines. While that may not sound promising, he did perform very well in that role where he drove possession and created offense. That suggests that he should be able to adequately take on more difficult assignments and replace Schenn's minutes from the past season. The problem is that Schenn wasn't a top four guy this season and I don't think Franson can go from a heavily sheltered bottom pairing guy to a guy that plays against average or slightly above average competition and be anywhere near as successful.

I wouldn't hold out hope on Franson stepping up to play in the top four next season so he's either shipped out or staying on the third pair. If the latter, the Leafs need to bring in another top four guy or bank on Komi returning to his former top four glory.

Assuming that Justin Shultz doesn't sign with the Leafs how can Franson even get back in the lineup? Plus since he's an RFA is Burke going to even try and re-sign him? Finally yesterday Burke said that Korbinian Holzer should make the team next year and basically replaces Schenn. So their Defense could look like this.

Phaneuf - Gunnarsson
Liles - Komisarek
Gardiner - Holzer

So that leaves Franson as the 7th Defensman.

I think

With Schultz

Gunnar Dion
Gards Schultz
Liles Komi
Holzer

With Franson being dealt with CMac for something.

Without Schultz

Gunnar Dion
Liles Komi
Gards Franson.

If Toronto gets Schultz then we have Dion, Gards, Schultz Liles as offensive D. They need to have some Defense and toughness.

My concern is that now that the leafs have traded Aulie and Schenn, who carries the physical play? Toronto needs someone to make teams scared. Dion is not enough.

How does Holzer compare physically to Komi and schenn?
