Saw this news..

Really excited to see that Seattle is warming to the new arena idea. I see this being an excellent market for the NHL.

ESPN's take:

Quote:
The Seattle City Council has agreed to a deal that would build a $490 million arena that could host NBA and NHL teams.

The King County Council previously approved the plan, which calls for $200 million in public money.

The city council wanted investor Chris Hansen to address concerns about traffic congestion raised by the Port of Seattle and businesses in the area south of downtown. The agreement announced by council members Tuesday creates a $40 million transportation infrastructure fund.

The Canadians like this #SeattleArena deal. I'll be on Edmonton's @TheTeam1260 at 12:40, and Vancouver's @team1040 at 1:05. Listen in.. #NHL
(From Chris Daniels' Twitter feed)

Anyone in Edmonton or Vancouver listen in to these interviews?

Still a long way to go, but a very important step. Congrats, guys.

Plus, looking forward to seeing the topics about when Seattle plays Nashville for the obvious Chris Hansen/Predators jokes that are waiting to be made.

“@ChrisDaniels5: Everything I hear from folks in #NHL circles, is that Seattle jumps to the top of the list for the league when/if/ever city gets Arena deal.”

Finance Committee vote was 7-0 with an abstention. On same report on KOMO 4, Hansen was interviewed and was asked about any specific contact with NBA about a current team and he said he could not comment on those conversations (something to that effect). Made it sound to me he is like already talking seriously to NBA about a team!!

edit: On same report they stated council should vote on deal on Sept. 24th.

Here's Chris Daniels' story on the vote. He mentioned in his live report at 5:00 that it was 7-0 with one abstention - that of Nick Licata, who is known as being very anti-arena/stadium. Licata, according to Daniels, wants to review this again and that's why the delay occurred. I'd look for Licata to end up voting no on this, but he may end up being the only no vote.

The one person that NEVER bothered to show up today Richard Conlin and he has been a NO since DAY 1. Licata could still be a yes and he sounded very positive regarding the proposal. It doesn't matter if it was 17th or the 24th. They will approval the proposal in the full council.

Pass city and county council, environmental impact study done. Shovel can go into ground in 3rd quarter 2013 if we have a team

While it looks as if the NBA’s return is inevitable — Hansen and his group of investors can look for an available team once the arena deal is finalized — chatter about an NHL team in Seattle grew this week, at least north of the border and particularly in Vancouver.

Can the same be said for the folks some three hours south down Interstate 5?

“I was actually surprised at how much excitement there was for (an) NHL team in the stuff I heard from people,” said O’Brien. “Not the same as the Sonics for sure … but I think it probably speaks to the number of transplants living in Seattle.”

A Seattle NHL team would give the Canucks their first true geographic rivalry. The closest NHL markets to Vancouver are Calgary and Edmonton, and the once entertaining spark between the clubs has been downgraded somewhat, with the Flames and Oilers struggling near, or at, the bottom of the Western Conference for the past few years.

“I wouldn’t have any objections or reservations at all to a team in Seattle. It’s a great sports town and a great city to visit,” Canucks general manager Mike Gillis told Vancouver Sun sports reporter Elliott Pap Wednesday.

“It would put a team closer than any other team in our time zone. I think we can enhance their business and they can probably enhance ours. So I think it would be great for us.”

Went down to FX McRorys in the Stadium district where Chris Hansen "bought everyone a beer". There was probably about 1,000 people including Hansen, the mayor, city council representatives and some former NBAers. As with everything for the arena, it's primarily to get the Sonics back since that is what people knew and lost. There were definitely though a handful of people wearing Canucks, Thunderbirds & Silvertips gear on site to show that hockey is a factor here.

*Upon entry, you got a ticket good for a Redhook ESB or BudLight beer being served in the makeshift beer garden. Hansen said he's been offered many drinks but wouldn't accept one until the arena is built and the Sonics were back in town.

If Seattle gets an NBA and NHL team, my guesses are the Sacramento Kings and the Phoenix Coyotes. If the Coyotes get committed ownership, then perhaps the Blue Jackets or Isles.

As much as I love my Edmonton Oilers, there is a small part of me that hopes Daryl Katz keeps being ridiculous and ultimately moves them to Seattle once their lease expires in 2015, then I'd have a chance to see them play once in a while! That arena construction deal is looking shakier by the day...

Relocate the Florida Panthers to Seattle and rename them the Storm or Thunder or some reference to rain. Thoughts?
