Talk about getting exposed on your 2nd d pairing. Unless the puck is outside their own zone, you might as well hope for a penalty or forwards getting the puck out of the zone.

When are line combinations ever constant?

They are pretty solidly set on most (good) teams. It was RW that juggled lines every game, heck, every shift, seemingly.

I would put Gunnarsson with Shultz if we land him. Guy can play well with anyone and have great chemistry. Would be a good steady presence with a rookie. Then Liles with Komi/Franson/Holzer(?), and Phaneuf with Gardiner on the top line.

Phaneuf with Gardiner sounds like a recipe for disaster as well. They both constantly join the rush. Gardiner is less than stellar in the defensive zone and Phaneuf is definitely not someone who would be able to constantly cover up Gardiner's defensive breakdowns. IMO, each of them need a defense-first partner on defense.

I kind of like the idea of having Gunnarsson-Phaneuf continue to be our top pairing, getting the most minutes, and then splitting minutes pretty much evenly between Liles-Franson and Gardiner-Schultz (if he comes here).

KULEMIN DEAL NOT DONE

The Maple Leafs don’t figure on being unable to agree on a contract with restricted free agent Nikolai Kulemin.

“Our intention is to get him signed to a multi-year deal,” Leafs senior vice-president of hockey operations David Nonis said. “We think a lot of him.”

Negotiations with Kulemin’s agent, Gary Greenstin, began a while ago, but the clubs are not yet close to an agreement. There was some exasperation on both sides during talks two years ago, but a deal eventually was done.

The other Leafs who were due qualifying offers – defenceman Cody Franson and forward Matt Frattin — got them, Nonis confirmed. So did possible important pieces of the future, including goalies Ben Scrivens and Jussi Rynnas and defenceman Korbinian Holzer.

There is no rush to re-sign any of those players.

Forwards Joey Crabb and Jay Rosehill are facing unrestricted free agency, and they likely will be testing those waters. The Leafs want to improve their bottom six forwards, signings that would have an influence on the futures of Crabb and Rosehill.

I'm not expecting the rookie defensive lapses like last year. He will be another year older, more physically developed, more experienced. His biggest problem i saw was apprehension about whether he should pressure guys or not. like whether to chase behind the net, where to be infront of the net to tie someone up. I hoping these get better. I'm trying to make more even defensive pairings, Phaneuf-Gunnar are good together, but that leaves the other 2 greatly inferior, leading Phaneuf having to continue playing half the game, which will continue to lead to his less than stellar performance. He needs less minutes, and to do that, other lines have to be more relied upon. And because we have none of the players that would best compliment them, I think these are the most even possible lines.

No point doing it right now since we have no clue who will have a top 10 pick. At the actual draft next year it could be possible, but I doubt it. I can't see Burke moving Phaneuf and I expect there would be very few teams willing to move a top 10 pick in a draft that's supposed to be unreal.

At TDL.

If gardiner (or schultz, if we sign him) become our best dman next season then I wouldn't be opposed to getting a top 10ish pick for Phaneuf.

Get a legit top C in one of the best drafts of the decade since its near impossible to trade for one ....

I dont see a team in the bottom 10 moving their 1st round pick at the trade deadline. Unless it's a dumbass GM like Snow lol.

Is there any interest in Peter Mueller?

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Aaron...lson/122/45209

He might be worth a flier, no? He's injury prone, but he's young (24), he has size (6'2 204), and has played center in the past (though he's a better winger).

He only played 32 games last year and had 7 goals and 16pts. But I remember how good he looked when he first got traded to Colorado. It was a small sample size, but in 15 games he had 9g 11a 20pts and was a +4.

Not that I don't mind stock piling centerman, but we really need to go after someone who's a 1C talent. I don't think Mueller (I've seen some mock line ups that have him as the 1C) is capable of that big of a jump.

When in doubt, trade with Columbus.

I thought about this last night... I know Colorado liked him but he's been so prone to injury, and he's battled pretty significant concussion issues the last couple seasons.

Worth a flier? Yes.

Worth a flier without knowing what Colborne will look like this fall, still having Connolly and Bozak on the roster? I don't think so.

Unless we can seriously trim our roster, there wouldn't be any room for any NHL regulars.

Peter Mueller will probably look at rosters that he has a chance on actually making out of camp. Toronto isn't really that team right now.

Mueller could be a #1 C in TO , where else could offer that?

Talk about unrealistic expectations from a player that was just cut loose for nothing.

Get real. If he can be a #1 center, Bozak can be a Hall Of Famer.
