Top priority is obviously the back end but theres not much there available beyond Suter. Next should be a winger for Sid, preferably a right hander that can also be used on the PP beyond Parise of course.
During the season i think the priority remains watching/assessing this defense and suring it up if need be. Even trading some of our prospects if you have to.
ETA: If Parise doesn't come that certainly opens up the possibilty of Sid and Geno penalty killing which i wouldn't mind at all.

Sort-of hoping Detroit takes the initiative here. That would at least put us in a driver seat. However, they could get Suter and Semin in only 4 days. that would be hardcore for Detroit.
I hate when people say things like this. Every year it's the same thing, then people start getting signed and then it's "OMG it's a weak FA class this year, wait till next year" all over again.
That’s a great counter…
I mean, was that even necessary? Free agent classes are routinely thin and thick – just look at any year Brad Richards gets a contract. 2012 is rather thin; add to that it’s fairly uncommon to have two of the bigger powerhouses – Pit and Det – in such positions of wide open cap space. 2013 is thicker. Perhaps any sort of reasonable counter would have involved showing how many free agents for 2012 got signed prior to free agency, to show how many potential free agents in 2013 wouldn't make it to market. But by all means, berate me and quote me as using childish acronyms like OMG and IDK. You’re so above me.

I see Carle play quite a bit and I have to admit he’s a tough one to figure out. His puck-moving skills and passing are better than Martin, but he’s just as weak in front of the net, and even if he hurts you offensively (playing against him), he’s a joy to play against. He lets guys have liberties in front of the net, is rarely physical, and just doesn’t really have a mean bone in his body.

Ha, I’d do it if I was a writer. You’d basically be reading what a majority of your reading base is thinking. Then you can play to their emotions.

I hope they acquire Semin's rights. Would make up the instant front-runner for Parise. Suter is still up for grabs. It'd be funny if they got Parise and we got Suter. They don't have the replacement on D and lose big time IMO.
I think Bryan Allen would be a good fit. The Penguins definitely need a big, gritty D man. I doubt Allen would be that expensive, maybe $3.5M - $4M. We need a D like that, he's pretty quick for his size.
EDIT: But from what I hear, the Pens top interest is a top winger for Sid and a top defenseman to pair with Letang. I don't think Shero will target Bryan Allen.
he woulda got term and 5 mil from lots of teams. people are talking about garrion getting 5 mil so wideman getting that is not surprising.
He was a 3rd pairing defenseman in Washington this past season. Garrison and Carle (who are really the only two defensemen left), are both better, IMO. I don't think he would have got 5 years and 5+ million from a lot of teams, unless a lot of teams were downright desperate. Giving him a deal like that is piss poor cap management, I think.

I don't think you will be seeing a deal between the gmrs and gmgm. Mcphee seemed alil bitter at the draft when interviewed said that he had inquired about staal on Friday as well and was told he was not availible. And never got a call back that that's changed. I don't know why he even cares think it was no secret jordan wanted to go to carolina. Maybe he's mad he was dealt to his division. I dunno he just seemed awfully snarky cause he brought it up himself. They asked him what his thought were about the trade and that was his response.

Maybe you are confusing Wideman with someone else? He got 46 points and played 24 minutes a night which was tops for the Caps last season by over 2 minutes per game. Also made the all star team.
