Damien Cox: Toronto should offer-sheet Cory Schneider.

Quote:
Nothing happened, and Burke's comments that he wasn't going to "strip-mine" his organization to get a goalie without mentioning Luongo specifically suggested Gillis is asking for a lot more than Burke -- or anybody -- is willing to give. Only Florida is also in the mix, it appears, which works for Luongo since it's his first choice.

Gillis says he's in no hurry. Well, he might want to re-think that.

There's one card Burke could play, one that would turn relations between the two clubs downright ugly.

The Leafs GM could lay down a huge, multi-year, multimillion offer sheet next Monday for the other Vancouver goalie, 26-year-old restricted free agent Cory Schneider, the Canucks goalie every team would rather get if they had a choice.

That wouldn't get them Schneider; Vancouver would have to match rather than accept multiple first rounders from Toronto.
I would offer him 8 years at 6.8M per season.

Compensation would be two 1st round picks, a 2nd round pick and a 3rd round pick.

But why?

We know Burke's thoughts on Offer Sheets, and he'd have to pay through the nose in terms of salary in order for Gillis to allow him to leave.

Force Mike Gillis' hand into having two very expensive 'tenders. And if Roberto isn't willing to move to teams other than Florida, Schneider is the one who is going to have to be traded.

send a sheet for whatever a 1st 2nd & 3rd maxes out at. Trolljob when they match and are spending 10 million on goalies cap wise.

Frontload it too, maybe can hit 20M salary wise per year on goalies

I wouldn't offer sheet anyone this year, 2013 draft is too good. We don't need a goalie that badly.

6.8 million per over 8 years for a goalie that has never not been the back up. This is one of the worst ideas I've ever heard on HF.

Because Gillis won't/didn't trade Luongo to Toronto. Working under the assumption that Luongo would waive to go to the Leafs.

after the last fiasco obviously Burke is done offersheeting. It's pure speculation on cox's part.

I'm down for trying to screw over Vancouver and all but I doubt Corey would even sign an os with us

I have to agree. I firmly believe Schneider will be an excellent starter (on whichever team he ends up on), but that is way too much.

If the prior club declines its Right to First Refusal, it will be entitled to draft pick compensation based on the annual annual value of the new deal. This is determined by dividing total compensation by the less of the number of years of the offer sheet, or five years.

So:

$6.8 * 8 = $54.4/5 years =$10.88
$7,835,219 and higher: Four first-round picks

Therefore Yes, it is.

I doubt Burke will do that but if he does here are the compensations:

Quote:
$1,034,249 annual cap hit or less: No compensation
$1,034,249 $1,567,043: Third-round pick
$1,567,043 $3,134,088: Second-round pick
$3,134,088 $4,701,131: First and third-round pick
$4,701,131 $6,268,175: First, second and third-round pick
$6,268,175 $7,835,219: Two first-round picks, a second and third
$7,835,219 and higher: Four first-round picks
and if I can remember right, anything over 5+ yrs is an auomatic 4-1st round pick.

the only decent option would be 4x 4.700M for Schneider, anything above that would be over-payment from Burke I beleive

Sigh.

The whole "omgz Burke hates offer sheets" thing is blown out of proportion. He doesn't have issues with the idea of the offer sheet, he took personal issue with how the Penner one was handled and how it inflated salary.

I'd personally do something like 5.5 million over 4 years. Vancouver matches, kinda forces Vancouver's hand a bit.

1. I wish people would understand the distinction between giving a player an offer sheet, and a player signing that offer sheet. Just because somebody sends one over, it can be ignored - which probably happens often. A team only has to decide between matching, and receiving compensation if that player signs the offer.

2. Considering Burke's position on offer sheets, I doubt he does this.

3. Cory Schneider has yet to earn the salary level that it would take to pry him out of Vancouver via an offer sheet. The Canucks have plenty of cap space, and would and could match just about any offer. Somebody mentioned 6.8 per season above. Schneider has yet to justify anything close to this - and if any GM who offers this, he is a fool.

4. It is not July 1st yet. Schneider is still property of the Canucks - and from all indications he enjoys the city, it's a winning team, and he knows that the starting job is now his to lose. I'm sure management has made their intentions for him very clear now that his contract is up for negotiation. I doubt he is itching to leave.

If Gillis can get two firsts + from Toronto I'd do it. We all know those picks are going to be top 5 minimum, so why not

If I was Burke I'd offer 5M per (years don't matter) to Schneider. If he signs, and Vancouver doesn't match Toronto gets him at 5M for however many years they stipulated. If they want low risk, they can go low years, if they want high risk they can go high years. Compensation is only a 1st, 2nd, 3rd.

If he signs the offer sheet and Vancouver matches, they now have over 10M tied up in goalies. For a cup contending team, that's too much. They'll have to trade Luongo, at which point Toronto can get him at a song rather than the alleged huge overpayment that Vancouver is demanding.

If he doesn't sign the offer-sheet, he didn't want to play in Toronto anyway and you can go back to trying to get Luongo at a premium price or search for a goalie elsewhere.

Honestly, I'm all for business ethics, but if Burke doesn't do this he's a moron.

well.. Hopefully he will call Gillis to let him know--cause he got rather annoyed when the oilers did it it to him
