Dana White, UFC 148 and the rematch that almost wasn't: Silva vs. Sonnen II

Quote:
"When we did the press conference down in Brazil, Silva hadn't even agreed to fight him," White said. "That fight wasn't happening. I had them bring Anderson to the place where the press conference was, and we sat in a room for three hours fighting about the fight."

Fans may remember the April 24 news conference in Rio de Janeiro for its late start. And White said that late start was because he and his biggest star were at odds over Silva signing on for the rematch.

"Yeah, (Chael knew)," White said. "He knew there was no fight. (What Chael said) was true, absolutely true. We went down there to make that fight. We set up a press conference, and I had to get it done."

"(Silva wants to fight) anybody but Chael," White said. "He thinks Chael is disrespectful and doesn't deserve a shot at this title at all. So leading up to the press conference, it was delayed an hour because I was fighting with him in my room."
Quote:
On a conference call this past week with media members, Sonnen and White, Silva showed a level of anger toward his opponent he hadn't displayed before. And his comments have been the story of the fight in the last two weeks leading up to the bout. But White said it even took some battling to get Silva to be on the call – further proof the champion still may be turning up his nose over having to fight Sonnen again.

"He's pissed at us about that. He's genuinely mad," White said. "And that's part of the reason he flipped out on the call, because he wasn't even going to get on the call. [UFC vice president of communications] Caren Bell found out in Brazil that he wasn't going to be on the call, and then I made the call and said, 'You better be on the call.' And it led right up until (the call started)."

True enough.

Some of the parts with Anderson speaking in English are just awkward though. At least he's speaking for himself now though.

Is Soares completely out of Blackhouse? I can't remember.

Is it just me or was the intent to have the fight in Brazil just a sham to get Anderson to sign on to the fight?

I thought Silva didn't end up signing for the fight until after the venue changed was announced? Actually if I recall correctly, Dana announced at that press conference in Brazil that the fight was being moved to Vegas which is why Silva was so pissed off. Anyway, I read that Silva is set to make upwards of $7M for this fight as Dana had to really grease the wheels in order for him to sign, so he's really got nothing to complain about.

I see, maybe you're right.

I can't recall him complaining since signing though, has he?

No I don't think he has but he sure was complaining about having to fight Sonnen in the first place and then more when the venue change was announced. In that article posted Dana talks about how he argued with Anderson for hours before the press conference to get him to take the fight.

I don't get Anderson. On one hand he talks about how Chael doesn't deserve the opportunity to fight him because he's so disrespectful but now that he's been forced/convinced to take the fight he talks about how much he's going to kick his ass and make him pay. If a guy disrespected me and my family like that I wouldn't need any extra motivation to take the fight, I'd want a piece of him without the promise of a payday.

I really, really get the feeling that Anderson doesn't think he's going to win this fight.

I don't think its that he thinks he's going to lose, I just think Silva really isn't a fan of rematches when he's already beaten a guy. He's acted the same way when talking about rematches with Henderson and Marquardt.

Plus Silva has gotten mad before at this whole disrespect thing. Lutter and Belfort come to mind as Silva wasn't a fan of their pre-fight antics. Lutter missing weight, and Belfort basically calling Silva a phony.

I don't blame him one bit for complaining initially. Sonnen got caught cheating after he fought him, then got permission to cheat from the athletic commission, as long as he cheats less.

Further, I think Silva is entitled to negotiate terms to his liking, no? He's the champ, and the greatest ever. He wanted this fight in Brazil. I can only imagine moving it out of Brazil would cost him a huge amount of money in terms of sponsorship, etc. I'm sure the resistance after the location change happened was mostly to do with Anderson getting his share of the pie.

Sonnen could very well take his title though. This is going to be a tough fight. I can't wait to see what happens.

Finally a fight I'm pumped to see.

One of them is going to straight up dominate, I just don't know who yet.

Is angry Anderson a better or worse fighter?

Silva said his gameplan is to keep punching Chael until he gives up, didn't he try that in their first fight only to have Chael walk through his punches continually and take him down? I really don't think Anderson is going to finish Chael standing up and the likelihood is that Chael's going to get Anderson on his back again. We'll probably get to see if Chael has improved his submission defense.

I think Silva will beat Sonnen, he probably has trained hard on his take down defense which was his major weakness in the first fight. Sonnen was pretty strong on his feet as well last time (which was surprising) so I see Silva going for another Submission victory.

Just saying it's really weird how out of all the people many of us know it's usually only athletes that have TRT.

It's not common but seems common in athletes.

Constant weight cutting, and prior steroid use, can affect the bodies ability to naturally produce testosterone.

It's common for wrestlers to use do to years of severe weight cutting that ****s their systems up later in life. Henderson, Couture, and Hughes all use it.
