GTA Trio: Jesse Blacker, Stuart Percy or Matthew Finn?

Jesse Blacker is obviously ahead in development due to him being the oldest of the 3.

- Jesse Blacker is from downtown Toronto.
- Stuart Percy is from Oakville.
- Matthew Finn is from Etobicoke (Kipling/Eglinton)

Which prospect do you like better?

Blacker right now for sure. I don't know who will be better in 2-3 years.

Blacker is like a Gardiner (not saying he'll turn out that great), he skates great (was one of his flaws before), he's got a good shot, can make a good pass.

I would say his offense is a little less than Gardiner but he's more physical than Gardiner.

Blacker for now but we'll see where the other two are in 2-3 years.

Blacker for me. I really like this guy and think he brings a lot of intangibles for a young prospect.

Let's see what happens in the future.

Hard not to like Blacker right now.

I still think Percy will have as much value as Blacker though. Really an underrated prospect.

I like them all, but Blacker is exciting. Percy is still so young and Finn is a new shiny prospect. Hopefully they all make their mark in the NHL.

Percy. I love his game, extremely intelligent player and in my mind has huge upside despite most people's view of him as a "safe" pick.

What is promising is that both Percy and Finn were held in higher regard in their respective draft years than Jesse, but Blacker has come such a long way in his development that it looks like he may be the overwhelming favourite right now.

1. Jesse Blacker (#3/4 defenceman)
2. Matthew Finn (#4 defenceman)
3. Stuart Percy (#4/5 defenceman)

I think Finn has higher offensive upside than Percy.

Blacker: 40-45 point upside
Finn: 35-40 point upside
Percy: 30-35 point upside

Percy

Dont have much of an opinion on Finn yet so my assessment on him is premature.

Blacker gets caught flat footed at times. Hes got good puck moving ability, but his defensive responsibility/foot speed is no where near as good as Percy's.

Percy is and will be considered a steal at #25. I see a ton of potential in that kid. Young captain that quarterbacked his team to a mem cup final. He has the ability to grow into a player very similar to Ryan Murray IMO. Not overly physical but an extremely heady player. Very responsible with a high hockey IQ. Almost always makes the right decision.

I personally feel that leaf fans have overrated Blacker. I watched a lot of Marlies this year, and i can tell you that during the playoffs we were a better team without him in the line-up. When Percy stepped in for Blacker's injury he was a perfect fit with Gardiner. Both players complimented each other perfectly.

I see some future with Blacker, just not in Toronto. Hes mostly a puck moving defense man and hes not better than Rielly, Gardiner, JML. I'd almost even say that hes not better than Percy, but his sample size is to small. Blacker's trade is a PMD. he managed 16 points in 58 games on one of the highest scoring AHL teams. Not sold on him at all.

I watch Majors (steelheads) and Marlies games on a regular basis. most definitely more excited about Percy.

Both players played with the Marlies in the playoffs this year. The coach wasnt going to put Blacker back in because of how well Percy was playing, but he gave Blacker the spot because of seniority.

I'm biased, but I've always been high on Blacker, played junior in Owen Sound and I got to see him plenty. I think he will eventually be the best out of the three. Hes just steadily improved seemingly every time I've seen him. Could definitely see him as a 2nd pairing guy

I like all of them. I think they all have very high upside and obviously Blacker is farthest along in his development. IMO, Finn will be the best of the bunch, followed by Blacker, then Percy.

I never heard of Matt Finn before Friday so some psychic ability is involved either way.

If I need to answer then Percy because he is the highest pick.

Blacker leaving the Spitfires to go to a #1 role in Owen Sound was a GREAT move for his development. It really helped round out his game, get him used to big minutes and being used in key situations.

Percy has great hockey IQ. His injury last year really impeded us from seeing what kind of development he may or may not have taken since being drafted, I'm expecting a really solid year from him this year.

Finn is new, recently drafted, well rounded game. Definitely like him, I think he has solid NHL potential, though it's obviously harder to predict at that age.

Didn't Don Cherry say that Burke was ignoring the local GTA kids? That's odd.

Right now: Blacker, Percy, Finn

Ranking in respective draft year: Finn, Percy, Blacker

Overall potential (IMO): Finn, Blacker, Percy

I really like them all as prospects, and believe they all play a smart, positionally sound, mobile, 2-way game. Blacker has a little more sandpaper than the other two, Percy seems like he's got the intelligence and leadership, and Finn (imo) has the highest overall upside.

Yea, I'm pretty sure someone pointed out that we've drafted more Ontario kids than any other team in the league since Burke got here... and Cherry harps on Burke for not getting enough Ontario/Canadian talent.

Cherry is a moron. CBC is terrible compared to TSN IMO. Cherry/Milbury are complete clowns, I switch the channel in between periods if I'm watching HNIC because I can't stand these guys. They're absurdly stubborn and ill-informed.

Based on potential, I honestly see them in this order:

Percy
Finn
Blacker

I think at the NHL Level, Blacker becomes a solid bottom pairing guy, but one you're not afraid to throw over the boards.

Percy I feel will become a #3/4 D, but one with the ability to step into the top pairing if injuries occur. I think a lot of people underestimate what a solid D he will become - doing everything well, but not flashy.

Finn I think will also be a solid middle pairing D, his upside I don't see as high as Percy, but very well rounded and solid none the less.

When you consider what we have coming in the way of D though, man it's awesome! Looking at the whole picture, I'd see:

Reilly, Gardiner (and hopefully Shultz!) with top pairing potential (I'm not saying a #1 D, but that's another story)
Percy, Finn, Gunnarson and with an outside shot - Nilson (I love what this kid brings, but he's a project) as potential middle pairing D. Blacker may get to that group, but I'm not sold.

Blacker, Granberg, and maybe Nilson (if he doesn't reach his full potential) as very solid bottom pairing guys.

In 4 or so years - our D will be overflowing with talent, that some of these guys will have to be moved for help in other areas.
