Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jordan Eberle and Nail Yakupov (2nd contracts)

By 2015-16, the Edmonton Oilers will have these four guys under their 2nd contracts.

Current cap-hits:

Hall: $3.75M
RNH: $3.775M
Eberle: $1.158M
Yakupov: $3.775M
Total: $12.458M

By the summer of 2015, how much of Edmonton's salary cap will be invested in these four guys?

Knowing the oilers, all will be overpaid

They're all going to be in the 4.4-5's I would assume at the very least.

And we don't know what's going to happen with the cap in the future. It definitely looks dicey.

22.5 mil - 24 mil for all of them with 3 year extensions so they remain RFA's... If for some reason they want out look for 5 year deals at around 20-23 mil.

Eberle is gonna be hitting 6M-6.5 if he throws up another 70 point season

I imagine Hall will get atleast 5 if he manages to put together a close to complete season (70+ games) at around the pace he was this year.

RNH will get 5+ also

Yakupov who knows, the rest have already shown enough potential to get 5+ per year, its just staying healthy, and well Hemsky got paid and hes injured all the time, so they'll get paid regardless.

Anything under 5 will not happen. RFA or not. I would wager all of them getting 6+ IMO if things go the way they are going with them potential wise. Sounds like cap hell, but I guess its a good thing to have cap hell when its these types of players.

I think they might all take roughly the same amount of money.
$6m for all 4 sounds reasonable and the Oilers will easily be able to afford that.

Assuming they all continue to progress and get better, it would be cool if they all said "let's take the same contract (say Tavares deal) and just build a dynasty". 4 contracts at 5.5 per = $22 million and let Edmonton do whatever they have to attract/draft/sign other lines and defensemen.

At the same time, if they get sick of no progress by the organization and say "**** it pay me", could you blame em for wanting to get paid?

The free agent market is totally different than signing RFAs.

See the Kesler, Neal or Ryan contracts.

RFAs usually don't tend to get paid prime dollars.

You're right. If Spezza is making $7m, these four should ask for at least that much.

Just like the Oilers of the 80's they will not be able to afford to keep them all.

Just look at what the salary cap did to Chicago when all their ELC's ended at about the same time.

Edmonton will be no different. As well, if I were a prospect named Justin I would look at this pending brick wall and wonder where will the money for me be coming from.

Cap isn't an issue if it stays the same @ around 5-6 million. Cap increases up to 7-8 a piece.

Hemsky will go down, Horcoff will go down, Khabibulin won't be around etc, this frees up a ton of space around 2015.

The 80s? Really? The CBA was completely different then...so different that it has zero bearing on today's situation.

Chicago somewhat messed up their situation, but it's not like they're completely gutted right now.

I don't get it at all. They'll be able to keep all 4 if their cap is 5-6. Other teams like Vancouver, Pittsburgh and recently Detroit when they had Lidstrom put a lot of their cap in 4-5 players.

Of course we are assuming the Oilers don't pick another top 6 forward at #1 overall next year. Nor do they add any significant pieces to replace Smyth, Khabby, Horcoff, or Hemsky ... The white light at the end of the tunnel is not daylight.

asumming a cap of +/- 81.5M... (5% increase a year)

Hall: $5.75M-7.50M
RNH: $5.00M-7.00M
Eberle: $6.00M-8.00M (The one I believe will become the best of them)
Yakupov: $4.50M-.5.75M
------------------------------
Total: 21.00M-28.00M

pure assumption, so hard to guess I'd say
in other words, 1/4-1/3 of the Team's Salary Cap

If Oilers players are in a position to command top flight money, that means they've been doing well in the NHL. I'm pretty sure this is the least of Oilers fans concerns and I only see opposing fans being concerned about this, moreso than Oilers fans themselves.

True, but the players still liked to get paid. Having a roster full of all-stars isn't easy on the wallet for a small market team.
