Tim Connolly to Chicago

I know that Chicago is looking for more depth down the middle. What do you guys think of adding Tim Connolly? He had a rough year in Toronto but historically this is a very skilled player. He is also coming up on a contract year so I imagine he will be playing with a little more gusto this year. Let me start it off.

To Chicago
Tim Connolly

To Toronto
Bryan Bickell
Rostislav Olesz

What do you think?

Burke is reluctant to take on any deals that go past next season. What kind of contracts do Bickell and Olesz have?

Bickell is a UFA next season (541K this year), Olesz has one more year after this coming one at $3.125M. I was thinking maybe a pick/prospect could also come Toronto's way, but wasn't sure of the valuation to put on it.

Bickell is one year close to league minimum then UFA. Olesz is one of the worst contracts in the league. He was dumped in the AHL last year and would be the price you pay for getting rid of Connolly's 4.5 million and getting Bickell for free in that proposed offer.

As for my opinion, come back at the trade deadline if TC is healthy and playing better. Right now I have no interest in Connolly.

Connolly is still a useful player though, Olesz couldn't even put up a PPG in the AHL.

Neither team does this. Hawks won't want to add salary for a player who is a huge question mark, and the Leafs won't take a 3+ million dollar AHL player with a 4th liner as the sweetener.

Rather have Connolly this year, then Olesz this year and next. Bickell isn't enough for Olesz's contract

Agreed - out of all of LACK, Connolly has the most potential to bounce back and actually make a difference. If he stays healthy, I can see him putting up 45 to 50 points.

Everything is according to you though. Unless Chicago commits highway robbery, your comment 'terrible deal for Hawks' will soon follow.

No doubt neither team does this, but is adding slightly more salary for a player who can actually contribute really that terrible?

At least with Olesz we can dump him in the AHL. Connolly is not so bad to justify dumping hi s salary but not good enough to provide value at his cap hit.

Yep, Connolly is still a useful player. He's just paid too much.

Only 1 more year anyways.

Tim Connoly was in the top10 for blocked shots for nhl forwards.

More then happy to keep him as our #3 centerman until we can replace him internally.

Much rather move lombardi or komi then connoly or armstrong.

I really like Bickel, but it's not enough to take on an extra 2 years of 3+ mil caphit. We're really just sitting and waiting for the Connolly contract to expire so everyone can move on.

Not to say he's a bad player. He's good defensively, blocks shots, but very inconsistent. But most of all, he's blocking some of the prospects from moving up.

You're not going to take the cap hit. You're going to bury him in the minors.

If we didn't have an absolute waste of roster and cap space in the name of Johnny Oduya maybe this wouldn't be so bad

Frolik for Connolly is something more reasonable because cost wise it would only be adding about 2.1M to Hawks cap

Olesz is gonna be buried agian so his cap hit is of no consequence to Hawks

Taking on nearly 4M in cap on guy like Connolly is not viable ,, Moving Frolik so the actual increase is only 2.1-2.2M range makes more sense

Olesz's contract means nothing to Hawks cap ,, Taking on 4M cap increase of Connolly for Bickell swap is unreasonable

hmm, I agree with BWC. What would Leaf fans think of Frolik for Connolly? Frolik's a reclamation project but he is young with 2 20 goal seasons to his name. Saves the Leafs some cap room.

Bad deal for the hawks. Connoly is blah, especially for his cap hit

I really don't see the appeal for Toronto here....

Connolly...despite disappointing in his first season, is still a valuable commodity to the Leafs. He's our best playmaking centre (and with the addition of size in JvR could fit much better on our top line), and has a reasonable 2-way game. It's not like a group of Bozak/Grabovski/Connolly can afford to get any weaker.

Sure, if Toronto can upgrade they should absolutely look at doing so, but they're not going to do that trading with Chicago.

Matt Lombardi would make a lot more sense, as he really is the odd man out in the middle of the ice.

In before Leaf other fans laugh even harder that Buffalo signed a worse player than him for just 275 K less cap hit and for 4 years longer in Leino as his replacement.
