Strong goalie on a good contract. This will be a steal in 2-3 years if he keeps developing the way he has. Hopefully he's no longer in the SE by then

Good deal today, could be great in the coming years.

Glad he's staying in the NHL too... I would have to assume the KHL offer was for more money.

Great value for the Jets. A goalie as good as Luongo at a price less than Dipietro....Great Deal!

He's great now! His numbers suffer because of the ridiculous load he carried this year. Give him a few days off and remove those off games and his numbers are elite.

If he progresses mentally, this should be a good deal. He has the physical tools and the battling spirit, that's not an issue. But I've seen him enough to know that has mental lapses way too often to be called a top flight keeper.

We all get more mentally strong as we grow older, but you have to have a solid base to start from. I'm not 100% sure that he has it. The pressure of living up to the contract, pressure of the fans/media/team, 60-65 games every year for many years; maybe it's not in his makeup to handle that.

I could be proven wrong; that would just add to the running tally. But for those saying what a great deal this is, temper your expectations a bit. He's shown that he has the tools to be a top notch starter; now he has to actually go out and prove it.

That's doesn't seem like the "huge" price Pavelec's camp were saying he'd need to be paid to stick around a couple of weeks ago...

Gotta love all the Pavelec haters on Twitter. Can't wait to see them all going on about how great the deal is once next season is done and Pavelec puts up career bests while the Jets make the playoffs.

Yikes.
I guess this is the price you pay to a quality starter unless his name is Flower for which itself there is a need to add another milion bucks.

It's a pricy contract, and probably a little too pricy considering what Pavelec has accomplished to date. Having said that, and I've heard it echoed by a handful of people here, it's clear the Jets recognize what kind of potential Pavelec has.

As a massive Pavelec homer, every ounce of me wants to rip that article to shreds, but they do make some very valid points. I wouldn't argue for a second that Pavelec has done nothing to be considered an elite goalie, and every objective statistical measure points to that.

However, based on the subjective 'eyeball test', I truly believe he has what it takes to be special. Big, athletic, lightning reflexes, tremendous composure and demeanour. Moreover, I've seen some very steady improvement in aspects of his game that were weaknesses at the start of the year, namely rebound control, anticipating the play laterally, and stopping breakaways. Once he learns to be a bit more patient and not get pulled out of position so much, I think he'll be set.

Thanks for jacking up the price for ALL goalies now Cheveldayoff.

A goalie who has a career GAA of 3, no career playoff appearances and 50 wins less than Cary Price (ironically they are almost exactly the same age) gets almost 4 million a year.

Nice overpayment....I guess those KHL rumours made Chevy panic a little.

I could name 15 goalies that I would rather have start who make less than that cap hit.

Great deal, Pavelec is a few steps away from being a top goalie.

Have no idea why people hate on him, he's great, and this is coming from a fan of a rival team.

They certainly aren't. Both never been starters and both play in top class teams. GM offering 6 per to any of them should be fired and banished out of town.

Nobody seriously believes he was ever going to the KHL.

This is a contract on potential -- high for right now, yes, but his potential is huge, and he's incredibly driven to achieve it. He didn't have a goalie coach for most of his career, so a couple seasons working with Flaherty should help tighten up his flaws, which are mainly positional.

LoL, in what world could signing a young goalie to a long term deal with a "whopping" cap hit of 3.9 be a "disaster"?

The Habs also didn't make the playoffs, Carey Price is a great goalie though.

Goalie iis just one person. The Jets have their goalie, the Leafs don't.

That's life.

If Pavelec's stats don't skyrocket very soon, this'll be an ugly deal. But any time you can get him and Jonas Gustavsson at a combined ~5 million dollar cap hit, you have to do it
