This is great news for the Jets. The bottomline Pavelec's play style is comparable to star goaltenders like Quick, he makes entertaining saves (diving across an empty net to stop the puck) which turns on the crowd even more feeding his team.

The guy is 24 years young and has PLENTY of time left to mature into the possible great goaltender he can be. This was a good deal from both sides, we secure a goaltender long term who has great potential, he gets paid what he was looking for.

Bigger question is now who will back him up? Mason wants to be starter (which will never happen) and Gustavsson has his good games and bad games (but is younger).

Pavelec Conference Call

We have some quotes from today's Conference Call with Pavs who was in the Czech Republic.

Should have audio up soon. Chevy conference call in 15.

Pavelec's stats were pretty mediocre last season, but I'm expecting the team to be in general better defensively next year so this contract doesn't phase me at all.

So happy! Decent term and it's just a little pricey for now but I have no doubt it'll look really good in a couple years. We would've been screwed if he left.

I think we overpay next year....and then start to make hay over the last 4 years of the deal!

I love this deal. Keeps a fan favorite here and also lets the rest of the league know we are not cheap... but players are going to have to earn their money when they play here. which is fine by me. IMO alot of teams would of paid more givin the lack of goalies on the market.

Probably a bit unfair but don't read too much into my initial post. I like Pavs, and the breakdown year-by-year shows that he'll get 3.5 this year, which is okay and as long as he gets better just like his paycheques do, this will be a contract (avg.hit) that's great for both sides.

More positive endorsements by players playing in the 'Peg will spell great things for attracting talent in the future. At the very least, we can say we're not the Islanders or Columbus.

That is fair, though, in my opinion anyway. He's proven he has more than enough potential to be a top 10 goaltender, combine that with his age (25) and term of the deal (5 years), the going rate for such a contract for a player in Pavelec's shoes will escalate as the deal plays out.

I'm ok with this.

Awesome deal. Great job by both parties to get this deal done. I thought we were going to have to pay 4-4.5 mil a year and I could've seen us just walking out on that kind of money.

Haha true enough, I wonder how aggressively Chevy will go after Parise? Wouldn't that be something to have him also sign in Winnipeg. Parise, Ladd, Wheeler on a line would be killer.

That it is, then when you come to play here as an opponent we boo and heckle the ***** out of you. At which point you think, "they truly like me". Ilya is a knob.

A little OT and just a hunch, but I bet the next contract Bogosian signs (next off-season) is going to send a clear message that talented players who would would have options when they reach UFA, want to play and stay in Winnipeg.

I think this is a great deal all things considered.

Pav's agent knew the Jets were in a pickle if Pavs didn't return. Plus, you have the uncertainty with the CBA and the odds that the cap will possibly go up.

The Jets also got 2 UFA years as well (I think), and those are always more expensive. So I don't think you can compare it to guys like Quick in terms of Quick's 2nd contract as I don't think his bought any UFA years did it? (Correct me if I'm wrong).

Agree Aerial. I think Bogo signs a long deal when he's up next summer as a RFA - depending on the look of the new CBA.

As for this deal, a tad pricey but not bad at all. Nice work chevy. Locks him up for 5 yrs, so that costs a bit to do that too. Another clear message that guys want to return - slater, pavs.

Now let's get Kane signed.

Aye. I hope that this show of exuberance on Pavs' part helps to expedite contract talks with Kane if they're not going that well.

This could be a steal of a contract in a couple of years. Pavs seems to be trending upwards and I hope within the next 2-3 years he's noticed more around the league.

It's also really nice seeing that Pavs likes the city and always wanted to get a deal done here first and foremost. It shows a lot of character and commitment to the team.
