Addressing Leafs Needs

Luongo is not the answer for the Leafs, huge contracts and aging players put together aren't fun. Also, the Canucks want far too much and acquiring him jeopardizes the futures of Ben Scrivens and James Reimer. I personally think that the Leafs can afford to judge how these guys perform based on the first few games of the season, and if they can stay healthy these future netminders could hold down the fort.

What we really need is offence. I propose that we sign Cody Franson to a fair contract and then make this trade:
To Toronto: Eric Staal, Jordan Staal
To Carolina: Tyler Bozak, Mikhail Grabovski, Cody Franson, 2012/2013 1st round pick, 2013/2014 1st round pick

This trade is fair because Tyler Bozak and Cody Franson are young players with heart that can help Carolina re-build. Grabo had more points than Jordan Staal last year, and the first rounders help pay a fair price for Eric Staal that will help the Canes' re-build.

To create more balanced lines, more moves should be made. We should let Kulemin walk after last season's performance, as JVR shall fill his place nicely. With remaining cap space and a stronger offence we should be able to interest Shane Doan. Even if we have to overpay him a bit it'd be worth it. We could then trade Connolly for a late second or early third round pick, as he does not fit well into our bottom lines. Clarke Macarthur would also be traded for cap space, and the fact that he is too good to play on the third line. He would get a first round pick in next year's draft in return.

With this space we re-sign Scrivens, Frattin, and Joey Crabb if we feel he is neccesary. Our top 6 would potentially be the most dangerous in the league.
Lupul-E. Staal-Kessel
Van Riemsdyk-J. Staal-Doan

Not to mention that with Schenn and Franson gone, we could potentially interest Justin Schultz, as he would have a spot in the line up and we would look like a playoff team.

This is all hypothetical, but our lines would look something like:

Lupul-E. Staal-Kessel
Van Riemsdyk-J. Staal-Doan
Lombardi-Kadri-Frattin
Crabb/Brown/Prospect-Colborne-Steckel

The third line would develop their young talents, and Lombardi would hopefully bounce back from the concussion. With Lombardi's speed and the quickness of Kadri and Frattin, this would become Burke's coveted "energy line"

The fourth line would mostly be to develop Colborne as a player. He and Steckel would share the role of center and Steckel would be a great mentor, as he was highest in face-off percentage on the team. If Colborne could learn this and master the face-off he could be a force to be reckoned with in the future.

The D lines would look something like:

Phaneuf-Gunnarson
Liles-Gardiner
Komisarek-Schultz

Unfortunately, Komisarek will stick around unless he is bought out. He has not performed well and is on a ridiculous contract, no GM in his right mind would pick him up, and the Leafs organization will not likely buy him out or send him to the minors, even though he interferes with the development of propects and should be placed on waivers.

Let me know what you think

Why not Crosby and Malkin instead of the Staal brothers? Or do you think that's too far fetched?

Can't tell if serious or not.

You will need to add ATLEAST Gardiner and Rielly along with some other assets for Eric and Jordan Staal. But there is no way CAR does this just after acquiring jordan.

lol the trade proposed was bad enough, this line cracked me up.

You know who's actually YOUNGER than Tyler Bozak and better who the Canes can build around? JORDAN STAAL.

The simple fact I read "build," "around" and "Bozak" in the same sentence has me heading out to the LCBO to get plastered.... thanks

You lost me at suggesting that Reimer/Scrivens could hold down the fort.

I don't think this deal is that awful, Grabovski had an slow season and outperformed Jordan Staal. Malkin and Crosby would never fit into this trade. It's not perfect. But I do think adding a prospect or two to this would definitely make it reasonable.

Before suggesting trades, think if you would trade Staal brothers for that crap.

Ok, let's try it from a different angle:

If you were Jim Rutherford, would you honestly accept that package for the Staals?

Glad I could humour you, I suppose the Bozak line is kind of funny. As for Reimer holding down the fort, he definitely can if he can put his concussion behind him. Look to the start of last season. Phenomenal record, playing further out, a lot more confidence. After the concussion he was more shaky, more nervous, and played far too deep. Don't be surprised if he and Scrivens develop this year and begin to look solid in net. They both have the mentality and drive.

No I'd counter offer, and insist on a center such as Joe Colborne and a Defensive prospect like Korbinian Holzer, plus another draft pick.

He had one more point playing twelve more games. Real outperforming there.

honestly, with regards to Luongo. he's not that old, he's a great goalie on a LONG contract. it isn't overly bad in terms of money. he's a top 5 goalie making 6ish M per from what I remember. granted it's a 10 yr contract, but i'm sure he's got at least 4-6 years at top form.
