Is The CHL In Trouble?

Okay lets exclude all of the rumor or talk of official moves(Odessa) to juniors or the SPHL. Those have been out for awhile and we are all aware that quite a few teams appear to be looking elsewhere but check this out:

Quote:
A VERY important piece of information. This is a portion of the public record contract between the Central Hockey League(Horn Chen) and the WPHL (Global). This JOA contract was for 10 years in which the CHL would be operated by the WPHL. This concludes July 2011. Opens up a LOT of potential.

-----------

At the conclusion of the term of this Agreement, CHL shall have the option to purchase all of WPHL's interest in and rights related to the WPHL Teams then operating under this Agreement, and any other hockey-related assets of WPHL. Such assets shall be principally comprised of the WPHL Teams listed on Schedule A and the "grandfathered" WPHL Teams admitted pursuant to Paragraph 5. The CHL shall exercise such option by giving written notice to WPHL at least one hundred eighty (180) days prior to the expiration of this Agreement. The purchase price for the exercise of such option by either CHL or WPHL shall be the fair market value of the assets as of the end of the term of this Agreement as determined by an independent valuation expert acceptable to the WPHL and CHL. If the WPHL and CHL cannot in good faith agree on the selection of an independent third-party business valuator, then both parties will propose a firm and these two firms will be used to select the third-party valuator. Any dispute between the parties arising from the selection of the third-party valuator shall be governed by Paragraph 27 of this Agreement. Payment shall be made not later than June 15, 2011. In the event the CHL exercises its option hereunder, the term of the rights granted to ICC pursuant to Paragraph 9 hereof shall be extended for an additional ten (10) years, and the WPHL shall execute an agreement not to compete with the CHL for a period of five (5) years.

I read it in a post on another board, the sad part is there was no link on the post, i'm sure if it was "made public" with the right playing of words in a search on Google that it will appear. I just didn't have the time at the moment to really do much of a search.

This one may be a heck of a lot better though as it's shorter:

This is just a google list based on what I typed if you need to see it:

And c/o pelts35.com

Quote:
I found this agreement, http://contracts.onecle.com/global-e...01.07.19.shtml,

which does state...

"From the date of this Agreement through the completion of ten (10) seasons of play, but in no event later than May 30, 2011, the WPHL and CHL shall conduct operations jointly under the terms and conditions set forth herein, or as may be subsequently agreed from time to time in writing"

Feel free to read the rest of it and then re-open the thread if you deem that this is sufficient evidence.

Alright, just so I am reading this right. If the WPHL and CHL do not reach a new agreement, then the leagues could technically separate into their own entities?

Wouldn't this mean that any of the old WPHL franchises that still exist would no longer be allowed to be in the CHL? But teams like Fort Wayne or any of the other CHL members who had nothing to do with the WPHL would stay in the CHL basically? I've heard some IHL2.0 fans are convinced the CHL is just a pit stop for the Frankes. How did the IHL thing go down? Was it just an agreement like this for multiple years or did they just absorb who was left?

Man what an interesting read out of Odessa today:

http://www.oaoa.com/sports/hockey-64...sa-league.html

Quote:
Bossier-Shreveport, following its playoff run, is likely going to be turning out the lights, two years after new ownership saved it from a similar fate.
Quote:
Rapid City, Colorado, Missouri and Allen are rumored to be courting the ECHL.
Quote:
The honeymoon period obviously is over, and while the CHL gave its 2011-12 All-Star Game to the Arizona Sundogs, can you dress up an intersquad scrimmage and call it a spectacular?
BRILLIANT IDEA, give the All Star Game to Arizona, a market that is struggling now.

Quote:
The Central Hockey League, once a model of stable franchises, now more closely resembles the Titanic heading into the ice field.

Personally, I think this league is in DEEP trouble. Bossier-Shreveport nearly folded this past offseason. Travel costs are through the roof and salaries are escalating with the PHPA coming in. They lost Oklahoma City. Five remaining teams had attendance below 3,000 last season, and rumors have swirled about the continued success of Laredo. Arizona just hired a new GM who has a horrible track record.

It'll be interesting to see what happens in this league in the offseason.
Looks as though all I predicted, though early, has come true or will come true within the next few months...

Read between the lines people, this leagues toast. Though, i'm not gunna say it's because of the reason you've stated.

Though, I don't see 4+ teams joining the ECHL next season either.

It's going to be a very interesting spring/summer. Minor pro landscape could see some big changes.

My best bet in terms of CHL teams to the ECHL would be Fort Wayne and Colorado. Strong fan support for both clubs.

What about Rapid City> Would they also fit that description?

According to Michael Franke the Komets will be a CHL team next season:

http://www.news-sentinel.com/apps/pb...104280333/1002

Quote:
Just returned from a CHL owners meeting, Michael Franke said it's a weird time in minor league hockey right now as everyone continues to look around for answers to the sport's economic problems.
Quote:
“We've committed to the Central Hockey League,” he said. “There's no question about that. I'm satisfied with things in the CHL, but I'm not satisfied with things going on in the industry, and that's a broken record for me. I've been saying this for a long time.
Quote:
“We have a lot of smart people in the business now, probably a better group than we've had in a number of years. I'm sure all of those businessmen and businesswomen who are involved in ownership of these teams are beginning to do all the right things. I think we started that process out last spring. … I choose to be optimistic that things are going to work out well for minor league hockey.”
I think the 2nd and 3rd statements contradict themselves...

Interesting news out of Bloomington:

http://www.pantagraph.com/sports/hoc...cc4c002e0.html

Also keep in mind, their lease just expired. The fact Riggs is the only full time employee is a little curious. I could see them sticking in a USHL team in Bloomington.

Interesting article out of Quad City:

http://qctimes.com/sports/hockey/pro...cc4c03286.html

For the love of god ECHL, take Rapid City and Colorado and give Wheeling and Trenton a nice severance package. I know, I know....pretty much unlikely in Trenton but not for Wheeling I would say.

The Missouri Mavericks say they plan to play in the CHL next season:

http://www.examiner.net/sports/x8405...-hockey-season

Quote:
“Oh, you’re hearing the same rumors I’m hearing,” said Thiessen, the Missouri Mavericks president and general manager as he settled behind his desk and began talking about this past season and the future of the CHL.

“I’ll be totally honest with you and your readers. We all know that Odessa is no longer going to be a part of the league, and I believe a few other teams could also fold. But let me tell you this, the fewer teams – the more competitive things get. Some very good players are looking for a new team, and I know Scott’s phone has been ringing constantly.”
Alright then, the question I guess now becomes...how many?

Real Interesting News out of RGV:

http://www.themonitor.com/sports/icy...aits-bees.html

Quote:
But unlike in past years, a banner on the right side of the screen implores fans to “stay tuned for details about the 2011-2012 season.” In past years, no such banner was ever there.
Quote:
These days, waiting is most of what the Bees themselves are doing.
Quote:
They don’t know who their owner will be next season or when that will be decided. Their current owner isn’t talking to anybody it seems. They don’t know what their league will look like, who they’ll be playing or even what level that league will be or who will decide the franchise’s future.
That is one big mess right there, I have a hard time seeing them playing next year, I really do.

Good article. Like Brooks said, it is hard for a team to plan next season with nothing certain for next season. Wonder what the community is thinking.

In other CHL news both series in the conference finals are tied up 1-1.
Rapid City Rush vs Colorado Eagles (potential ECHL member); Allen Americans vs Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs (potential SPHL member).

the allen/boosier chl conference final is actually following a 3-2-2 format where Allen gets 5 games. It might just be something due to a conflict where boosier/shreveport play but i thought it was interesting.

Sounds like if Laredo stays pro the CHL will be a last resort:

http://killerbees.themonitor.com/201...nother-update/

Arizona has already signed a player for next season:
