Reviewing the Calgary Flames 2012 Draft Class (THW)

THW's Ryan Pike break down the draft from the FLames perspective:

Excerpt:

Quote:
"The Calgary Flames entered the 2012 NHL Draft with six draft picks. They left Consol Energy Center on Saturday evening with seven new players and most likely a bit of satisfaction in how they pulled the weekend off."

I'm happy we're dipping more into American players.

In case you missed profiles from our The Next Ones Draft Guide

Home Page: http://thehockeywriters.com/2012-nhl...the-next-ones/

We profiled almost a lot of the Flames picks in detail before the draft:

Mark Jankowski: http://thehockeywriters.com/mark-jan...the-wild-card/

Brett Kulak: (1 of my personal fav prospects in the draft) http://thehockeywriters.com/brett-ku...spect-profile/

Jon Gillies: http://thehockeywriters.com/jon-gill...man-on-campus/

Coda Gordon: http://thehockeywriters.com/coda-gor...spect-profile/

***

Where'd they rank in our rankings?

Top 150 Final Rankings:
http://thehockeywriters.com/2012-nhl...inal-rankings/
(Hint: Look for Kulak!)
- Sieloff ranked a little lower, but fea I have underestimated what the kid brings to the rink. I like the pick more and more...

Top 100 Fantasy-based Rankings:
http://thehockeywriters.com/2012-nhl...ased-rankings/
(Honestly now thin Jankowski belongs even higher up the list)

***

We didn't quite have a draft weekend like the Habs, but I really think the Flames ranked in the top 5 of all teams for overall draft results.

Uh... no.

We did good, but that's a major stretch.

Top 5?
I can think of teams that did better, a lot better. At this point of time, Calgary is in the middle of the pack, however, if a single thing slips up will find themselves bottom dwellers at the draft as always.

Last year was a top 5 at the draft year. Let's give it at least a year until we start ranking where we were. Will 100% depend on if Janko actually can play in a higher league.

This is the first draft class I've solidly been on board with for like the last 10 seasons. When you factor in high-end potential guys like Jankowski and Gillies, 'safe' picks like Sieloff, and true darkhorse/sleeper pick like Gordon, I'd at least suspect that has to be Top 10 league-wide.

Even if you ignore Jankowksi, I think the Flames had a very good draft in rounds 2-7.
