We are so depserate to land Shultz(not) that if we dont overpay for Luongo's horrible anchor contract we might not get him.Want the truth? We actually dont need him.Go look at our defense prospect pool.Dudley went to Montreal to deep six us.And they probably will get him,so what...next.

While I know he could still go anywhere, Burke has a good track record with signing these college or Euro FA's (Bozak, Gus, Owuya, Rynnas, Brenner, Irwin)
Why would he sign where there is not a proven #1 goalie behind him? He will get paid the same for his ELC no matter where he plays. It's his next contract where he will be paid on his history of NHL play. Not having a #1 goalie behind him will hurt his numbers, and thus, his next contract.
Relationships with people he knows: The GM who drafted him. The
coach who knows him. The D-partner he lived with.
Carlyle's system doesn't rely on a goaltender, and the drafting strategy, also shows that they want a D-corps who can move the puck
out of the zone. He seems to fit the bill.
I would love to have Rick Nash in Toronto. I think he has the potential to be a much better player with some of the offensive pressure off his back. He's still a top tier NHL talent, but he gets paid like an elite one and the asking price is that of an elite player. So in retrospect I like the player but not the price it would cost to land him.
Luongo I agree with Burke in not wanting to give what it would normally cost a team to land a player of Lou's caliber. I also would rather keep the prospects and suffer though another year or two of no playoffs then follow the same route of bringing in 30+ year old players for top level young talent. Stick with the rebuild if you wanted a goalie bad enough you should have went after Vokoun.
Schultz has a pile of options and I am sure there will be 29 teams looking for his services. But who really knows what team he'll pick and if he's already chosen a destination or not. I think teams like Edmonton and NY Rangers may have the inside track because unlike Toronto and Brian Burke we will not guarantee him a roster spot on the big club. And personally if the sticking point is a guaranteed roster spot then to hell with Schultz let a team like Edmonton or NYR sign him and watch just how quickly things turn from whine and cheese to sour grapes and prune juice if he doesn't perform to expectations in his first season or two.
I'd love to have all three on the Leafs but it sounds like Nash and Luongo are too expensive and if the reports (rumours) of Sgt. Schultz wanting to play top 4 are true then I might pass on all three. I think Shultz needs to earn a spot on an NHL roster not win it in a negotiation.
If I had to pick one I would pick Luongo. We need a goalie more than another D-man or winger at this time. He is the most elite of all the players available at this time IMHO. Unless you count Brodeur. I'd give him a nice retirement package.
berth. It's in the context of a situation or position in an organization or event.
Hmm, which dictionary can I find that in. Always like to know definitions, sometimes find out words I've been using are not exactly what I thought.
I've checked my Oxford hardcopy, and about 4 online references, but berthed has only referred to what happens with or on a ship, or giving wide berth to someone.

He's a scout's dream in the way he prepares himself and plays an unselfish game, making smart decisions with the puck. With his bloodlines, he certainly understands what it will take to make it at the next level.
The LEafs under no circumstance should trade for Luongo before Schultz signs, why would we want to free up cap space for a team in competition for the same player.

That is the "Catch 22" Burke is in. No goalie = No Schultz. Give up Gardiner to get Luongo = No Schultz.

Because they are all offering him the same money so any team in on him has already figured him into their cap situation.
