hes decent. but a top pairing D-man? i dont know. him and Smid as a pairing wouldnt be too bad but looking at 5+ million a year? id suspect a little better out of him for the teams hes been on.

he was also 25th in giveaways and 101st in takeaways with only 18.

i dont know if he's worth 5 million bucks in free agency over a long term contract.
I think we could do worse for that sort of contract though. (Wideman, Wiz) I still think if we could add him and Schultz, we could be a playoff team. Might not have an all-star on defense, but Smid, Carle, Petry, Schultz, Schultz and Whitney/Sutton is a very respectable D, to go with our makeyourdefense****theirpants offense.

Agreed.

Carle is the best UFA out there on the market.. other than Suter. He's more defensive in his own end than offensive in the offensive zone. That being said, he puts up decent offensive numbers. He has a very good/accurate first pass out of the zone as well. Right away, he'd be the Oilers top D'man. Oilers can afford paying him 5.5m per season. He's a much more rounded D'man than Wideman.

I personally hope the Oilers land him.

Edit:

The salary cap also increased by 6m as well. I think the Oilers are in a good position. Especially seeing how Horc will be off the books in a few years and Hemsky prob shipped out, the Oil will have room to accommodate the kids.

I see the pairings being something like this if we sign Carle.

Carle-N.Schultz
Smid-Petry
Whitney-Sutton
Potter

Whitney and Carle can be swapped depending how theyre playing any given night. Also would give us two solid PP's with Carle and Petry anchoring the 1st unit and Whitney and Sutton or Potter anchoring the 2nd unit.
We only use one Dman on the PP, specifically unit 1: Petry/Potter (If hes still here...) (RHS)

Unit 2: Carle/Whitney, with yakupov joining this unit

Regarding Carle I have a strange feeling he might be playing just south of us if we don't pursue him. i could see the flames offering 28.5 over 5 with a NMC. As bad as Widemann is Carle would fit pretty nice as a first line pairing.

Sarich signs in Calgary.

Guess they didn't want him coming here.

The dirty secret here is that both Carle and Wideman are worse defenseman than Jay Bouwmeester. You'll get more points out of them, but fewer minutes, and they are both more easily exposed.

Doan wants to play on a contender, not in Calgary.

If Doan leaves Phoenix, you have to think he is going to sign with a contender.

Brodeur testing free agency POTENTIALLY according to Dreger and McKenzie.

If Chicago gets him you have to put them back in contender status.

As Bob Stauffer pointed out, he's good friends with the owner of the Dallas Stars.

I think he's more interested in staying in the midwest than he is being on a contender.

Did they ever leave it?

8th and 6th the last 2 years after blowing up the depth and rolling with Crawford and Emery, I'd say so.

The Kings were 8th, though.

And really, being 6th in the West means you were a handful of points behind 2nd or 3rd.

And, great playoffs notwithstanding, Brodeur hasn't been consistently the same difference maker he used to be.

The news about Brodeur is suprising as hell, shocking really.

He's going to play maybe one more year in the NHL, would be weird if he ended his career outside of NJ.

I agree, but if he's serious about it, I will say Chicago. Going to Toronto would be a waste for the future HHOFer

So this is what the Flames line-up is looking like for next year. Not striking a lot of fear in me at this point. But if Kipper has a good year, they should be battling for 8th spot again.

Cammelleri ($6M) - Backlund (?) - Iginla ($7M)
Tanguay ($3.5M) - Cervenka ($3.775) - Glencross ($2.55M)
Comeau ($1.25M) - Stajan ($3.5M) - XXXX
XXXX - Bouma ($.7M) - Jackman ($.6M)

Boumeester ($6.7M) - Wideman ($5.25M)
Giordano ($4M) - Sarich ($2M)
Babchuk ($2.5M) - Butler ($1.25M)
Smith ($.8M)

Kipper ($5.8M)
Karlsson ($.8M)

Not to mention Chicago thoroughly outplayed Phoenix in the playoffs this year, only to lose because of their putrid goaltending.

Pretty weak at centre (and on D if JayBo is dealt). Cervenka is a pretty big question mark. Curious to see how he plays. Also curious to see what this team does with Hartley at the helm in place of Sutter.

Yeah, I don't see him signing anywhere but cup contenders. Only reason TO would ever be suggested is ongoing center of the universe narcissism.

Other than the amount of money he could garner on the open market, wonder how much this might have to do with the ownership instability they are having there.
