Well an assistants job is better than no job, which is his situation now after being let go by Chicago as part of their HC-GM feud. If he wants to continue to have a chance at a HC it is bettwer to stay adtive as an assistant and have yout name out there.

That Pete probably isn't going anywhere might not be a negative for him. Fewer and fewer teams tend to hire the assistant permently to follow up the coach because tose have mix results. And being apart of winning teams and strong organizations looks good on a resume.

I think he would be a good fit here. He was a well liked assistant in Chicago and hat is a good quality for an assistant.

Did anyone forget that Washington is the First game of the Season for the Devils? Right off the bat, we'll be facing Oates. Might as well get it out of the way with as little hype as possible.

I'm in the indifferent crowd but congrats to Oates.

I wouldn't mind Haviland here, but after what Pete showed us this past season and his hiring of Dave Barr, I would like to see who he comes up with to add to the staff and the offense. Is has to be a bit binding for coaches to come in and have to go with Lou's assistants but now I think Pete has earned a chance to bring in his own guy.

Let the hype begin now!

I'm not sad or glad that Oates is gone. I wanted him gone during the shorthanded goal debacle every other game including 4 games we directly lost because of them. I do think back to Patty saying this is the best coaching staff he's had his whole career. If we lose Oates, and Robinson it could be a loss.

so watch the caps lose the game, but win every faceoff and score 15 pp goals on 4 chances.

It's a bit premature, but if he does look shaky as a coach then they're really gonna wish they hadn't fired the beardless Santa Clause last year.

That would mean the Devils score 16 goals and I doubt that even with our "system" we could get THAT many.

Pete, Pete is the key. He'll bring in some good guys. I have faith in him.

I'm a manager at that swim club. He's building the rink on the club premises where the tennis courts currently are. He's a cool dude.

Mike Haviland actually stopped in today, believe it or not. Didn't get a chance to talk to him. He was there during the 30 minute trip I had to make to Lowe's, go figure. He'll be back in I'm sure.

Pete encouraged openness between the staff and the players, I really think that was the key to the team being so openly happy with coaching this season.
Not only do I trust Pete to help bring in quality guys, I'm also confident that he'll keep the communication flowing enough to hold onto the players confidence.

I'm happy for Oates, but not very broken up that he's leaving. Probably the ideal situation for this sort of thing.

The problem for Oatsie is that team is fundamentally flawed, and McPhee isn't about to take the blame for it. That's why Hunter left. You can't fix the Caps because their D is just too slow, and Semin is useless. Oates will end up taking the fall over it. Sucks, but true.

Hunter left because he'd rather coach the Knights than an NHL team. He's stated more than once that an NHL coaching job never really appealed to him.

And how is a D with Alzner, Carlson, and Green slow? They're all fantastic skaters.

yea this needed to happen. he wanted a HC and got it, which is great for him. and we desperately need someone who will consistently keep the pp a threat.

Lou hired Dave Barr. Pete only knew him from coaching against him in juniors. Thye were not close friends and had never coached together before.

I thought if it was on tip from Pete because he had respect for the guy from coaching against him?

I know Barr played for NJ. Remember when he had his forearm badly cut against Winnepeg?
