Why on Earth is Calgary giving up a pick to take on Gomez. That's absurd.

Babchuk has close to zero value and not negative value. You could give him away for free, and he is only signed for 1 more year.

We're not. Montreal has our 2nd already, we'd be getting it back.

Thanks. Misread. Not nearly as bad as I though then. If the Flames plan on doing nothing with the cap space, wouldn't be so bad then.

from Flames pov, I honestly think that if Gomez were to be bought out (which would make me very angry), CGY is potentially the most likely destination for him...
he'd immediately be their #1C, and his style could be very well suited to play with Iggy.

if Gomez does eventually get traded, I wouldn't be surprised to see CGY being the ones to bite given their need/cap situation.

Gomez for Stajan/Babchuk i'd consider, or the OP with Backlund added on the flames side.
Have you ever watched either Scott Gomez or the Calgary Flames? I'm not convinced Gomez would even be the #1 center in Abbotsford.

Watch most habs games, and living in Calgary I see 20-30 flames games/year.

As much as Gomez is not worth anywhere close to his cap hit, he's not nearly as bad as his stat line or general perception is.
Problem in Montreal is there are 3 superior C's ahead of him and we're a cap spending team.

For Cgy, who currently have Bavklund, Stajan & Cervenka as their C's, Gomez quite possibly would b the best suited of that group to centre their top line.
Cammy at C is an option, but he's better suited on the wing.

With the cap space they have, and the thin group of ufa talent available (and lack of prospect depth to pull a major trade for a C), Gomez as a move that allowed them to dump other underperforming contracts could make sense.

At worst, he really is a sub-40 pt player, at best the change of scenery helps him get back to a solid production level... Playing with Iggy, I'd bank more on the latter bc gomez's style meshes much better with him than it did with any fwds mtl had prior to last year (cole), where injuries & internal competition got in the way.

Gomez is still a top -9 NHL player, and in the right environment a return to ~60 pt production could easily happen... The cap hit, and playing on a cap limit team, is what's killing him.

keep dreaming flame fans if you thinking you're getting beaulieu or tinordi - or our first next year to take back Gomez. Keep dreaming.
We don't want stajan. we'll just keep your 2nd next year and bury gomez's last two years

Pretty much this, Montreal does not need to pawn Gomez off, they can afford to stick him in Hamilton.

Well, the Habs would basically be giving up a 2nd round pick for a couple million dollars in cap savings (right now) and almost four million dollars in cap savings for the 2013-14 season. It's basically a "draft pick for cap space" trade when you get down to its main impact on both teams.

Gomez and Stajan are both pretty useless (although both could conceivably improve), and Weber and Anton have very similar roles on their respective teams. Weber has more "potential", of course, but he's not somebody I cringe over the thought of trading.

Fair trade proposal. If I was the Habs GM, I'd seriously consider it.

If Calgary wanted Gomez, I'd rather put him on re-entry waivers and we could split the costs and Montreal wouldn't have to give up any assets. Also, it would save us from having him on the payroll for 4 years (buyout).

If the Islanders or CBJ pick him up first, what can you do.

What are your thoughts?
I'd be tempted to pull the trigger on that one. Not a fan of Stajan and Habs don't really need him, but they could buy him out if anything.

Habs don't want to move any picks. That is suppose to be great draft

the OP is something I'd think about......but in the end I'd rather not take on another underperformer just to save cap space

I'd rather bury Gomez in Hamilton

The Canuck fan in me is screaming, "Please do this! We'd love to play against Gomez six times a year." The rest of me, Hab and Nuck fan, is asking, "Why would you do this?"

No one wants Gomez. He should go to Hamilton.

If a team wants him, it'll be a Gomer for a 7th, or another slightly less bad contract to help keep a team above the floor. Otherwise, we're not shipping out things worth value to get him gone.
