Should have started last year. Why Leino! I mean it seems like Darcy has been learning on the job when it comes to contracts and signing players. Oh well.

I kind of like this deal to be quite honest. We'd have some additional flexibility with a guy like Marleau who can play LW or C , and a solid all situations center in Pavelski.

I wouldn't go after Marleau for the same reasons I wouldn't want Heatley.

First and foremost, he's 32 years old and extremely expensive. It'd cost a bunch of assets to land him, and assets I wouldn't be willing to part with.

I'd rather Buffalo continue building through the draft and only make a trade if a player like Ryan (25-years-old) is made available. Buffalo shouldn't be selling the farm for two year stopgaps.

Furthermore, I think he's an overrated player and very much a product of the system in SJ - but that's my opinion.

Vanek-Hodgson-Ryan
Ott-Leino-Pominville (Ott takes draws)
Foligno-Ennis-Stafford
Gerbe-McCormick-Kaleta
.
Who did the Sabres trade to get Ryan in this scenario?

If Stastny had the same cap hit as Roy, he wouldn't be rumored to be available.

Agree 100% - plus, Stastny came into the league and quickly established himself as a hard-working, creative player willing to compete; the fact that he's slumped the past 2 seasons shouldn't lead people to ignore his talent or the potential of him being rejuvenated in a new city where he becomes the top center again. He's only 27.

Mine too - not only because of the likely asking price that Semin and his agent will have after the past two seasons of $6M salaries but because the Sabres admitted concerns with Russian players bolting for the KHL. Yes, they drafted a Russian but only after extensive recon that convinced him he wouldn't bolt. Semin's history of disappearing and playing uninspired at times under demanding coaches doesn't bode well with Ruff. What happens after Ruff has a tirade and Semin decides to bolt to the KHL next summer like Radulov did with Nashville?

The potential reward isn't worth the potential risks when it comes to Semin IMO.

I'd obviously prefer Pavelski - and hope the Sharks are in fact making him available. However, I could see Regier being interested in Marleau if it takes less of a return to get him than it does Pavelski. Although he's 5 years older, Marleau's speed and size may also be more tempting to Regier as complements to Ennis/Hodgson.

That was a complete hypothetical. It was assuming Regier somehow landed Ryan using Sekera and a slew of futures (Armia/McNabb/etc).

I agree in that I could see Regier being in on Marleau. I just wouldn't care for it.

I'm not so sure that's true - if the various media reports from San Jose and national outlets are accurate, the "core" of the Sharks is in need of dismantling. With their NTCs/NMCs, ages and high salaries-cap hits, it will be hard to get fair value for Thornton, Marleau and Boyle IMO. That's why I suspect that Wilson, who definitely won't part with Couture, may have to sacrifice Pavelski from his pool of centers in order to bring new talent in amongst the forwards.

If he can find a taker for Marleau, and Marleau will waive his contract clause, I could see Wilson jumping at any reasonable offer just to shake the core up and dump some salary.

I'm not the biggest fan of Marleau, but you're selling him short. His expense is tempered by Stafford's departure, and honestly I think Pavelski is Hodgson's dream scenario in 5 years. If the cost of this certainty is Stafford for Marleau I make that move without hesitation.

Peter Mueller

Big centre with a lot of ability who has been ravished by injuries the past couple years. Wonder what kind of interest he will have around the league. If he is healthy might be worth rolling the dice on a short term deal.

Also a Rolston player at the USNTDP. I like his talent, but can we depend on him staying in the lineup. Recent history says no.

Thats beside the point. Mueller is probably more of a risk then Grigs. I see no reason to sign Mueller. He is young and has not really done a whole lot. I would rather just stick one of our draft picks in there.
