''Habs are clear cut winners'' (bragging rights?!!)

Just saw this ''interesting'' thread honoring (in many ways) our Trevor Timmins (Habs' chief scout) for his picks. And let's also give it up for all the other Hab scouts out there that are part of the Habs' organization (thank-you! merci!!). One things...Bergevin should sign Timmins for a long long time!!

Of course there are many jealous people, but still a good thread (actually I didn't read anything past page 1, so enter at your own risk, ex: Hab haters, bitter/angry/jealous people!!,etc...) .

I absolutely love our picks, but I'm actually a bit worried, since that's pretty much the exact same picks I would have made if they asked me out of nowhere to make the selections... Which might not be a good thing .

We made the sexy picks, but don't forget other GMs were aware X and Y players were available at Z spot. If they passed up on them, it's because they saw something bigger/better in other players...

For now, I'm more than happy with our draft, but let's not get ahead of ourselves just yet.

In that thread, the opinions vary from "Yes, habs clearly won the draft, and that's that," to "Well, we'll just see if they trade their prospects for an overpayed vet LOLOL."

I'm somewhere between these, closer to the first one. The habs got a great deal of impressive prospects, who if they develop, bring a lot to the table. I think they probably have more than any other team in this draft.

They could bust, Bergevin could trade them and picks away for over payed vets etc...

...but as of today, who drafted better?

Calgary is the clear winner. They got the best player in the draft.

Habs did well in my opinion but it is a bit of a stretch to think this draft will help us next season. With that reasoning the Oilers will win the cup!

Burke says TML did. And it`s entirely too early to brag about anything. We`ll do the bragging after the 25th SC.

Edmonton got the best player in the draft therefor are winners for me.

3 years from now, might be a different story!

Exactly, whoever picks the best player wins the draft. It's like saying Pittsburg didn't win the draft in 2005 because X team has draftted both Price and Kopitar. Whoever draft Crosby became the better team, even though Price and Kopitar are awesome players.

"Sexy" picks don't always end up being the best ones. I can remember past years salivating over a couple teams' performances (Colorado and Chicago come to mind, can't remember why), but there are always pre-draft favourites amongst draft watchers, and sometimes they gravitate onto a given team's draft list. It still doesn't always pan out. But for sure, I'll take being the team getting those accolades as opposed to not being that team.

Perhaps it has a little something to do with Matt Paul Pat and Jon?

One can argue Los Angeles won the 2005 draft, because they Got Kopitar and Quick. It's a legitimate argument.

...

Without having ever watched any of the prospects in this draft play, I'm going to go ahead and assume that the Flyers won this draft, as usual.

Exactly. Our Habs have Price but if we didn't...Kopitar and Quick for me.

But, Crosby in a Habs jersey (wearing 87) would be so tempting!!
(you'd just hope those concussions would go away).

None of these players have played a game in the NHL yet. On paper, it looks like a good draft.

Let's wait for the future before making any declarations of any kind about "winning". Hell there's even a thread right now about how the Habs are a dynasty in the making .

This is why it sucks to be a fan of this team. You know that the sky will be falling once we start losing a few games next year and that the players we just drafted aren't instantly in the NHL scoring 5 pts a night.

Habs did good on paper. So did several other teams. For all we know, a team no one expects could've "won" this draft and we will only know in a decade. Be happy that we got the players we wanted to draft, but don't declare it a win, or any such nonsense. If the teams before us didn't pick certain players, there are reasons. Let's remember that potential is useless if it isn't fulfilled. Throwing all our hope on a few new draftees isn't going to help that.

Everyone in that thread disagreed with what the OP said. Not one person said "hey, I really see where you're goin with that."

...it was a proud moment in hfboards habs fandom.

I'm sorry, what? The Oil got the highest rated player, doesn't mean he's the best. How many drafts do you have to watch to understand this? Wait a bit before claiming Nail is better than Alex

Wow! Lots of bitter people and killjoys out here!! (and Hab haters!!)
It's like these kill-joys don't want to see others get happy!

I'll just close this thread!!

BTW, this thread was started by a NON-HAB fan...not me or any other Hab fan!!

To all those who want to be happy with our picks...go straight ahead and get happy after all we had a terrible season and we have a right to get happy. We all know we have to wait 2-3 years before seeing some results, but it's not a crime to be excited by our picks. But, it's a crime to Hab-haters and bitter killjoys

Maybe you should have added in the 2nd line in my post about seeing in 3 years. As of "right now" Yakupov is the best player in the draft, hence Edmonton getting the best player. Context is a funny thing when you use it to your advantage and not so funny when you take things out of it.

Obviously there is no way to tell who is a winner of this draft until 5+ years down the road, but based off of rankings, projections, and reality, I think it's certainly not unfair or premature to say that, yes, the Canadiens are big winners on draft day as of now. Will it remain that way? Who knows, but for now, Bergevin, Timmins, and the scouting staff did a great job.

I'm happy, but a part of me says: "man, 20 scouts spend one year watching hockey all around the world, and all they do is selecting players in the same order as Bob Mckenzie!"

Very happy with Gally's pick though.
