The Detroit Red Wings have scheduled a press conference for Thursday, May 31, 2012, beginning at 11:00 a.m. ET in the C.C. Olympia Club at Joe Louis Arena. Participants at tomorrow’s press conference will include Red Wings Executive Vice President & General Manager Ken Holland and team captain Nicklas Lidstrom.
Is he returning? Retiring? Is it to annonce a new captaincy? So many questions !
With the Winter Classic, the departure of Brad Stuart, us still being a very good team with a shot to acquire some great players and the fact it's not even June 1st yet, I couldn't see him retiring. It just seems way too quick to make that decision especially after it was said he was going to wait until after team meetings. Although if he's coming back I doubt they'd mind the haste in that decision. Maybe a new contract?
New arena? Announcing that Lidstrom will be cloned? Who knows.
CBJ fan here in peace. If he is indeed retiring he's going out as one of the best defenseman ever and a true class act. Will miss watching him as I respect him greatly.
If this is the case, I'm really surprised he's announcing it this early.
I would have figured he'd at least wait until after the draft. When did they make the announcement last year that he was coming back? I can't seem to recall for some reason.

All he wanted was to get totally away from hockey for a couple of weeks. Last year he signed on June 20th. 2010 he signed on June 1st.

I'm telling you that deep bone bruise to the ankle is what did him in. I had one of those (not to the ankle) and it lingered, what would seem like, for ever. It even hurts from time to time now, if I tweak it the wrong way.
Being his age, and a hockey player? That was his retirement right there. If he does come back, it will nag him all season long. I think he knows this...

I would expect Ilitch to be in attendance if Lidstrom was calling it a career. Maybe he will be, and if so it was absolutely great seeing the 2nd best D-man ever to play all these year. Nothing but the best for him and his family always, hoping we get one last year.
Also anybody curious but don't most big stars retire after the season, not during the middle of the Finals. My guess is the NHL brass won't be happy if this is when the Wings and Lidstrom choose to make this announcement if it is a retirement.
