Generally I don't put a ton of stock in +/- but when a D-man consistently puts up a negative +/- despite being a decent point producer, it's cause for concern.

last season with the #7 seed Capitals: -8, 2nd worst +/- among D.
10/11 w/ #15 seed Florida: -26, worst +/- among D
09/10 w/ #6 seed Bruins: -14, 2nd worst +/- among D
08/09 w/ #1 seed Bruins: +32 + 50 points.. paired with Zdeno Chara.

This is not a good omen. Obviously, you can also just notice this from watching him play on a regular basis, but there's the statistical side of it as well.

Great. Now let's trade him to Edmonton for Hemsky. Then we both fill our needs with equally $hitty contracts

I take a 1 hour nap and this is what I see?

Eh, not the best contract, but I can live with it.

I love how some Edmonton fans call us the laughing stock of this forum when they made three number 1 picks in a row...

This is how you get talent in the UFA...if the cap goes to 70 mill then he accounts for about 7% of that.

So what you're saying is we should gobble up all the available D and drive up the value of Bouwmeester? I love it! We can create our own market and set the prices!

Perhaps. I just get tired of all the fanboy drivel. Where anything Flames management does is instantly applauded instead of evaluated. Like when we drafted Jankowski and everyone on here was screaming for Teravainen at 14, then Maatta at 21. Then proceeded to go on about what a great pick it was and how smart we were for making it. Have an opinion backed up by something instead of blindly loving every stupid move management makes.

I loved picks 4-6. I have reasons for it. Especially Black in the 6th round. I didn't like our first 3 picks. I liked other players more. I've liked our 2010 and 2011 drafts a lot. Loved the Glencross deal and was OK with the Tanguay deal. Hated the Babchuk deal. I don't blindly love every move management makes.

It makes no sense. We say we aren't rebuilding, then we take a 5 year project that "hopefully" pans out. This team is all over the map.

If you think Wideman would make a good top pairing defender against tough opposition, you've never seen him play. He's very similar to Liles, moves the puck well, gets shots through and gets eaten alive in his own end. If he plays on the top pairing with JBo or Gio (whichever really) that pairing gets eaten alive. He played very sheltered minutes with a caps team that wasn't very good defensively. Imagine him and JBo trying to contain Clowe, Thornton and Marleau on the cycle... *shudder*
lol. You're certainly entitled to your opinion but you don't need to be a ****** to other posters to do it.

I did defend my opinion. This signing strengthens our top 4. Wideman's grittier than you seem to think he is, he hits, he blacks shots, he plays 24 minutes a night. He also put up 45 points last year.

He makes our defense better.

Want to chime in again with another "stupid response?"

The Calgary Flames continue to defy all reasonable logic. They should just blow up and select MacKinnon 1st overall, stacked draft this year

Look at the numbers when the Caps turned it around with Hunter and had success. He was 5th on their team in average TOI. He played sheltered minutes and the team was successful.

Well look at the bright side, fans can grab his autograph while he's having a cigarette between periods.

You assume I haven't evaluated the deal because I have a different opinion than you?

I happen to like this signing. It fills a hole that I see in our D corps. And it's with a player that's relatively young, has good offensive ability, good mobility, and some grit.

IMO it makes our team better both now, and in the future (although the term of the contract is longer than I would have liked).

Does liking this deal make me a fanboy? Does my analysis lack reasoning? Or do we just have different opinions?

If you dislike opinions that are different than your own, maybe a discussion board's not the best place for you.

I don't like the term, but I don't hate the signing. We had an obvious hole on our top 4 and this addresses that. And really as long as Wideman is used in the proper role then this signing can work out. He needs to be put in an offensive role to succeed.

Maybe we should keep Jbo, he might be the ideal partner for him?? I still think he is a goner though.

I hope we will either re-sign Hannan/Sarich or find a new defensive defenseman, because I think our defense will be one of the worst defensively.

Doesn't look like his ice time dropped off drastically at all. Maybe a bit in February, but he was back up to 24 mins in March.

Why wouldn't we keep Bousmeester? Our defence was bad last year, just cause we sign one guy doesn't mean we have to get rid of another. This is simply a defensive upgrade.

Nah, I'm ok with it. Good on Feaster for not wanting to tank and lose to get picks.

Oilers fans must be jealous that their GM does NOTHING but draft inevitable 1st picks.

Not sure what to think here. I don't like the term or the cap hit, a little too high for each but it's a good player to bring in. I just hope the next signing is a defensemen to help the team DEFENSIVELY. Flames have been terrible in the backend the last few years.
