Really solid move.

Would have liked 4 years instead for term, dollar value is no big deal.

Don't understand all the whiners. I watched a fair bit of the Caps/NYR series and I thought he was really good. People throw the stats out there about how many goals were scored while he was on the ice but maybe someone can break down how many were a direct result of his play?

We weren't getting Suter so we grabbed maybe the next best UFA defenceman. We don't have a young Dman ready to step in and we can't afford trading assests that would be required to attain a similiar defenceman.

Feaster made a strong, decisive move.

From watching him a lot with the caps he's the kind of guy who can be really good if put in a position to succeed and really bad if put in a position to fail.

From my observation, things that made him succeed -

Offensively oriented system (at least counting on offense from PMDS).
Top pairing icetime. Ample PP time. He's a bit like Ballard in the sense that he starts sucking badly if his icetime is cut to 3rd/low 2nd pairing minutes.
Zone defense (great at blocking shots, decent enough along the boards, bad at chasing people though)
Mobile defensive partner who is very sound positionally and can move the puck enough to clear it well at least.

If the Flames manage to hit all of those notes I can see him having the type of seasons he had in Washington for the 1st half of the year - 45/50 points on the season playing 25 minutes a game and holding his own defensively.

I like getting Wideman but there had to be cheaper, more rational options. He's making the same money as Duncan Keith! Those D-men that are above average offensively and satisfactory defensively (60 Off/ 40 Def) put teams in the worst position because in the summer teams only shell out for straight numbers.

as the cap goes up the salaries go up, comparisons get a little distorted

he was 10th in league scoring by defencemen and is the 18th highest paid defenceman in the league. that seems like good value.

only thing that bothers me.is the nmc but its not the end of the world.

he fills a big hole on the blue line. great move

Great score by Feaster. When you look at the FA market this year, I think Feaster has gotten himself a real bargain!

As a netural party, I think the money, and the term are fine given the current cap situation, and the FA class. Just like you, I think 3/4 years would be ideal, but adding a year to get a player you want isn't that big of a deal if they're still in their 20's.

The NMC is what I don't like. He got good money, and good term, that should have been enough.

I didn't think he would sign for less than 5M anywhere. People who thought he'd get around 4 are just being unrealistic. Most of the people in the trade board are just basing their opinions on 2 or 3 games they have seen him play, or the stupid posts from caps fans crying about his problems during the playoffs. It's like they expect top pairing defence out of him.

He is what a PMD is - adequete defence for #4/#5 but a PP beast, who will really help improve your transition game.

It's just a HF trend now to bash every UFA signing unless the player takes a paycut (ALA Liles). It's almost like they don't learn the fact that you have to pay a little extra in the UFA market.

Good post. Sums up my thoughts pretty good aswell, when I first heard about the signing I didn't think there's any way in hell a ntc/nmc would come with it.

I haven't seen alot of Wideman, he fills a need on this team, I'm not going to be calling this a horrible signing or a great signing until I at least see how he plays as a Flame.

HF hates the Flames because they will not conform to what is sexy and do a scortch earth rebuild. I like the move, minus the NMC but really that is over blown to. We have moved several players in the past that have had those so have proven it can be done.

I'm happy with the player we got and I think if we use him on the 2nd pairing, he is going to make our club a lot better.

Having said that, Cap hit is high but that was going to happen with FA looming. Term is about 2 years too long, and an NMC just makes this deal tough to swallow.

Hopefully it works out because if his Offense dries up we will be on the hook for 5 years.

I am scared of what it would take to lock him up though...

If we landed him we could move one of our wingers for a top-6 center though.

Lol yeah I don't want to think about the contract at all, but we have a hole on the right side, and he's got unbelievable skill. He's not old, and could contribute for a long time. I think whatever money we threw would be worth it. Top 3 centre in conjunction with Jay Bouw maybe. Or jay bouw for other pieces and then those pieces and the spare forward for a more well rounded D Man

It addressed 2 very specific needs for this team though.

We needed RHD that could play some decent minutes, and we need more offense from the blue line.

This one signing does both of those things.

Yes I haven't seen anyone else confirm the NMC so I don't think it exists.

Keep Aliu, Jones, Bouma, etc, in the minors. Fill out the forwards with Jagr, Hudler, Whitney, Mueller, Prust, get Shane O'brien, let Kipper take care of the rest. Boom. Playoffs. Cup.
