He gets more hate around here than he should. Most of the responses have been pretty accurate though. Personally, I think he's a really good acquisition for Calgary right now though. I guess Bouwmeester's as good as gone?

Edit: I would have been livid if the Capitals had re-signed him.

Flames needed an offensive D.

Hope he can provide the points.

Use him on the powerplay (Just don't let him carry the puck into the zone, ugh) and pair with someone who can skate (Dennis is pretty damn slow) A possible JayBo-Wideman pairing might work, but jaybo might be on his way out now, so who knows.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'll take a 'wait-and-see' approach with Wideman. It's tough to say much about it this early.

Especially impressive considering Anisimov walks right through Wideman to gain the zone before the Rangers' first goal.

Give it a month and the rest of your fellow Flames fans will be ready stick Feaster with pitchforks. He is one of the most overated players in the league. He is a product of many fans looking at offensive numbers for a defenseman. Who knows how he work for the Flames though. Strange things happen in this game.

He was pretty good for us on the PP.

He was very good offensively and solid defensively early last season.

But as the season wore on, his defensive game slid. Boneheaded mental errors... one after another.

By playoffs I knew something bad would happen whenever he was on the ice.

This. Except at this point, I'm just glad McPhee had the sense not resign him.

I'm not surprised at Wideman's payday. Pretty much in line with what Wiz got last year but I'd take Wiz anyday of the week over Wideman.

I hated Hunter's love for Wideman more than I disliked Wideman himself. DW carried the mail offensively up until the All Star showing. After the ASG there wasn't much there. I'd worry about his leg - it just looked like he was favoring it by the end of the season.

From Calgary's end I haven't read anything but I thought I saw a post alluding to Wideman signing at the expense of Bouwmeester. YIKES! I'd much rather JB than DW.

Good luck with Wideman but by the end of the season he was more like Dennis the Menace to me.

I think the fact that Wideman is on his fifth NHL team before his 30th birthday says pretty much all there is to be said. The sixth team to hold his rights if you count the fact he was drafted by Buffalo.

Wideman pluses:
- Heck of a slap shot from the blue line
- Has a heck of a stare

Wideman negatives:
- Prone to gaffes, many gaffes, aka brain farts
- to call him a PMD is a slap to the face to all real PMD, he often had trouble skating the puck out of his own end of the ice
- telegraphs his passes and his shots, resulting in them being intercepted or blocked, this includes those hard slap shots he has from the point, he often takes forever to tee up the shot allowing for the defense to adjust and set up.
- Decision making is horrible, especially in defensive end of the ice

Good riddance. Cannot believe the salary and term that he got.

Didn't he even admit after one game that his defensive play was on par with a turnstile.

He was good pre-All Star break, bad post-All Star break, nearly single handedly cost us the Bruins series and went back to being merely bad against the Rangers. But to be fair, his play against the Bruins was fluke-ishly bad.

He said it was in that one particular game.

This is a perfect description of Wideman. At first I was actually a fan of his game and he was playing decent defensively and thought prior teams fans were wrong in there assessment of him but as the season went on the warts came out and by the playoffs I was pulling my hair out whenever he was on the ice.

Quite useful in the regular season, but regularly abused in playoffs.

I'll be interested to see if he's paired with Hannan (if he re-signs). Those two did admirably together down the stretch for BB two years ago prior to his injury. Third pair ES minutes with PP time and I think he'll earn that contract.... initially before he wears down by the last 2ish years.
