I hope the players don't budge even if it means we lose the season. Bettman is the one that said they had to have a cap for the league to work so he got his cap, got a lucrative US tv contract, got a 24% rollback in player salaries and now he's saying none of that works? Time to fire him and look long and hard at the league, what works and what doesn't.

Except Bettman.

I don't know how you can blame Fehr. One of the first things Bettman did when he got his job was the 94 lockout. Every single time a new CBA is needed his go-to move is the lockout. After 3 of them, the players knew what was going to happen so they brought in their own attack dog. Fehr is a direct response to Bettman and his tactics. The owners want to play rough? The players are willing to do the same now. It was pretty much inevitable.

That sounds about right--at least on background.

(That's not to say the NHLPA has accorded itself perfectly in the negotiations, but it seems rich to cast Fehr as the problem in hockey labor relations...)

Yeah. I'm not saying the NHLPA is clean as a whistle...but they had to bring in someone to counter Bettman. With the way these past lockouts have gone for the players, it's not surprising.

I was actually unhappy about Fehr getting involved...until the owners gave their initial offer.

It WAS working until the salary of the players nearly doubled in 7 years. If there was not the ability to go to 55,56, and 57% based on revenue, I doubt this many teams are losing money

And please, go ahead and tell me who you think would make a better Commissioner. They don't just grow on trees you know

What is their definition of "soon?" December?

Apparently the NHL will only cancel 2 more 2 week sections of the season before they just call the season off.

Good.Like Bobby Ryan said yesterday, the players just want to jump ship to europe instead of trying to stay here and try to fix the issues..

This will get a new PA proposal pretty quickly since they don't want to lose all of the money this year

I guess we'll see. That keeps the players from stalling until the Winter Classic is threatened, if they considered that a strategy. One would hope this lights a fire under some ass. If the players respond quickly and then the league drags its feet I'll wonder how serious they are, or if everyone involved is just monumentally stupid.

I think the players have to vote on any proposal before Fehr sends it. Does anybody know what quorum is?

That would take them through roughly Thanksgiving?

PRobably not that far off. I can't imagine them starting a new season after Jan. 1.

Pretty much. It's a shorter time frame than what I remember from the last lockout and I think it's shorter than the NBA lockout last year as well. I didn't pay much attention to the NBA though.

Also, it turns out the players only vote when it's pretty much the final deal.

Actually

Quote:
Nope. It's up to Fehr and the NHLPA Negotiating Committee - the Executive Director (Fehr), the NHLPA General Counsel (Fehr's brother Steve) and other members appointed by the Executive Board (made up of the 30 team player reps).

The Negotiating Committee reports status back to and consults with the Executive Board, but does not require Executive Board (or other player) approval before making offers.
So if the committee likes the deal, they can put it to vote

Sooo, yeah. Just about the final deal, as opposed to any proposal they send.

Final approval requires a membership vote, though, right?

By both sides. Nobody has told me what the quorum or majority for either side is, though. I was just curious, we'll find out when/if it happens.

I'm not pro either side, but I'm just listening to Daly's meetings update and his saying that mediators are only needed if the two parties don't understand each other makes me think he either doesn't have much clue about negotiation or he, as the spokesperson of the owners, willingly refuses to look for the best way to solve this dispute.

I don't know whether the numbers are true, but if you can, say, based on past years, project what would happen in the future in regards to income (barring extreme circumstances), it's not not unreasonable to equate the two.
