Crosby to me is essentially a grinder who does everything by the books, but at a level that pretty much no one else in the game ever has. He checks off every box, he knows the best means to an end, he can win every puck, receive every pass and basically just do what needs to be done to get a goal. Of course he also has elite skill but I think his true dominance comes from his ability to simplify every play to its absolute bare boned core.

The closest player I can think of off the top of my head would be Zach Parise, although the gap between the two is huge.

None of the above.

It's hard to quantify why Crosby is so good. He's not that big or menacing, he's not graceful like Forsberg, he's not necessarily a pretty player.

But when he's on the ice, he's just always in the right spot, always instilling fear in the opponent, can set up other players in a moments notice, and can put the puck in the net almost at will. I've just never seen him play without determination.

God, I hate that man.

At playing the game in the way that Crosby does? No, not really. Off the top of my head Parise is the closest I can think of. I'd also say that Daniel Alfredsson about 5 years ago was a similar player and a better player than Parise, but he still was a clear level below Crosby. Lots of players can do lots of things as well as Crosby, but Crosby has an incredible and I'd say unmatched arsenal of things he can do extremely well. I see him sort of like a forward version of Lidstrom in that way. He's not just textbook, he's THE textbook.

I don't think he even instill's fear, I think it's just frustration. He's not overly physical, but he just always seems to get the puck off the boards, or make the right play.
He's an amazing athlete, but it's his tenacity and brain that separates him.

I was going to say Yzerman as well; however, Crosby is more of the 1980's Yzerman in terms of skill and ability who converted to the more complete (less offensive) version of Yzerman of 1990s at a younger age than Yzerman himself did.

He's the first pick for many to build a franchise around, it's understandable.

I do feel his shot lacks accuracy and velocity. It's these factors that make him hard to compare. Both James Neal and Evgeni Malkin possess a better shot and they're on the same team.

I must clarify that he's a below average body checker. I don't want to take a cheap shot at his concussions. I feel it detracts from the discussion.

He was young and learned as he went. He felt that because he was successful in the QMJHL he could translate that success into the NHL immediately. His game lacked subtly and as a remedy he was spoiled by management. I don't feel comfortable claiming him to be one of the best Captains in NHL until he proves it.

I compare him to Giroux or Jagr.

Crosby reminds me of Joe Sakic. He's not as physical as Forsberg, and is a much better goal scorer. Crosby has all of the tenacity that Sakic did, just without the wrister.

I think Joe Sakic is a pretty good comparable. Stamkos has a harder shot, Ovechkin is faster, Crosby just puts together the most complete game I've seen since he entered the league, but has that "it" factor, and the vision to always seem to be in the right place. I think it's a mark of a really special player, that he doesn't need a "gimmick"... not to say that Stamkos' shot is a gimmick, but it's probably what people most associate with him, and I don't think Crosby really has anything like that (unless you want to say vision, but that's so intangible). Somehow without having a huge leg up on his competition in any particular category, he manages to be the most dominant player in the league and it's not really close when he's on.

I guess one thing that I've always noticed him to do better than anyone else is the passes behind the back. He can do that like no one else in the league... at the same time though it's not like everyone talks about "Crosby and his amazing behind-the-back passes" anytime he comes up.

He does do other things better. I can't really think about who I would compare him to.

Claude Giroux? Maybe Jagr?

What about Parise? He's grittier though right? Hard to compare Sid the Kid with anyone. He's so good with his feet. But, lately, he's lost a step. Which isn't to say he's still great. He'll likely bounce back this year and we'll end up having the whole conversation over again.

I am convinced you have never even seen Sidney Crosby play
