Pens sign Jayson Megna (2 yrs | 925,000 per | 2-way deal)

Mike Colligan ‏@MikeColligan
#Pens finalizing contract w/ F Jayson Megna, a prospect camp invite out of Nebraska-Omaha, stood out in camp with high-end speed and skills

I don't remember hearing much about him at the prospect camp.

I was hoping they'd work out something with Sustr.

There was talk about him in the prspect thread. Latest there was it was a 3-team race. Good if this rumour is tru. We arent exatly crowded in the forward pipeline.

Here he is with a nice SO goal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Am4RSvJikqY

He's 22 so is that a 3 year ELC or a 2 year?

If he's decent and in the forward pipeline, I won't complain. We obviously lack in that department.

Of course I'd like to see the winger and Dman issue addressed too.

Nice. Right hand shot, decent size, and put up good numbers, albeit as an older freshman.

The Pens should know this player well, not only from Prospect Camp, but also through watching his team scouting fellow Pens prospect Josh Archibald. It is obvious that we now need to re-do our entire prospect pool rankings.

Now, all we need to do is sign Sustr!!!

I don't think there are Dman issues.

Zbynek Michalek was traded, Simon Despres will be promoted.

Despres-Letang
Orpik-Niskanen
Martin-Engelland
Lovejoy

Strait
Bortuzzo
Morrow
Pouliot
Maatta
Harrington
Dumoulin
Ruopp
Samuelsson
Sneep
Grant

etc.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who believes this. I honestly think we could end up trading Martin or Niskanen if someone like Strait or Bortuzzo is able to take that 3rd pairing spot.

As far as I remember it:
18-21 -> 3 year ELC
22-23 -> 2 year ELC
24 -> 1 year ELC
25+ -> no ELC, can be signed to standard contract

The Pens are almost up against the 50 contracts limit now if this news holds true.

You shouldn't get your hopes up about Sustr - he attended the Lightning summer prospect camp before he came to the Pens' camp. And the Lightning have a lot fewer defensive prospects in their system. I would think the Pens are a longshot to sign him.

I would be completely shocked if Sustr signed here. There are much better options for him out there. Some organization will undoubtedly put him in their top 6.

I didn't mean issues with our dman prospect depth...any idiot knows we have no worries there.

My issue is with our top 6 this year. Can Niskanen take over Z's minutes on the PK? Will he be effective? Is Despres really ready? As good as he looked last year, there were times he got benched because of breakdowns and flat out getting beat.

If Despres is ready, which I hope and believe he is, I'll be happy. If he struggles and Niskanen doesn't adapt to a bigger role, that's where our issues arise. We still need a physical crease clearer.

Pat Kileen can buzz off for all I care. Nick Petersen's status still seems up in the air. I hope a taker can be found for Lovejoy, as Strait and Bortuzzo are ready for the NHL and if Lovejoy were to clear waivers that'd just put a Dumoulin or Morrow too far down the depth chart for my liking.

I have a feeling Ray will free some contracts up...Lovejoy might not be a Penguin when the season starts, hopefully. It's the best situation for both parties at this point.

So, is WBS the favorite to win it all next year? Or just considered one of many "contenders" at this point? I don't follow the Baby Pens at all. All I've really gathered is that apparently their fans are idiots? Haha.

Megna is a very very good hockey player. I got to watch him for 2 years in Cedar Rapids (USHL). His dad is a former NFL player. As you can see via the youtube video, he is amazing in Shootouts. All-WCHA rookie team.

I moved to Scranton recently so I'll probably be checking out some Baby Pens games. All this talk about them having a great offseason is really exciting for me!

This guy played at a HS that was a big rival to my own (I attended when wheels were still made of stone and before cell phones existed). This makes him an automatic punk.

Seriously though, those moves were nice but that looks like the typical case of a guy who matured ahead of his competition but then as he gets older his competition catches up to him. I don't think he'll be pulling moves like that against good AHL D. Seems unlikely, anyway.

Haha @ punk.. yeah he won't pull that off against an average AHL D

That's awesome. The WB/S games are really fun to attend! And if you miss any of the games, I'll have the highlights too

Stacked for Defense...

We have very little depth in terms of forwards: Wing or Center

Beau Bennett - Year 2 or 3
Kuhn - 2 +

Anybody else... not really...

No, not just stacked for defense...stacked.

He wasn't just talking about prospects; the Baby Pens added an AHL all-star goalie and a number of productive AHL forwards.
