Yeah.. but it's still pleasant to hear. If he takes anything under max contract, it's a steal. I would say every team would offer him max contract. The fact this kid could pass up 30m in his career to win is ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous.

That's why #87 is the way he is. We are so blessed in Pittsburgh. The fact that Geno would probably follow is even better.

Yes, but one would think in that case he'd have said 'expected same cap hit' or something like that. Hey, it could be 8.7M. It could be more. BUT, we're talking maybe 5% more at most.

As I said, it's great on its own. It's awesome to think that Geno likely would follow suit (although how the new CBA will affect things worries a little). And, it's beyond incredible to think what all of this means in terms of Ray Shero's shopping trip on Sunday.

8.7 is not close to 9?
Is it more likely that the superstitious '87' wearing Crosby takes 8.7 and earns lots of points for 'putting winning first' than taking some arbitrary slightly higher number?

Then why not take a cool 10

Expected the same for Staal and then all of a sudden that news that he wanted to be closer and play with his bro. Also Crosby could have signed a 4-5 year deal and have again an option to leave after that. Glad it's a long term deal that pretty much goes until retirement

See above. Yeah, 8.7 is close to 9. Then again, in that case, one would think Dreger would have written 'same cap hit', not 'close to 9'. Could turn out to be 8.7M, but I suggested a few ways to incorporate 87 on the deal where the cap hit would be close to 9. No need to get your knickers in a twist over it.

Knickers in a twist? How do you figure?

Anyway, I suppose we should remember that there's nothing official about this. Dreger just said what news outlets have been saying since the first talks of Crosby negotiations came up.

True but Dreger isn't one to report crap. He isn't one of those and is well connected around the league

Crosby is extremely superstitious, especially about his number. I highly doubt it would be $9 million when that is so close to $8.7 so year in the end I bet it is just that, $8.7 million per. 12 years at $8.7 miilion per year would be $104.4 million, just a shade over $100 million so would bet dimes to dollars it is for 12 years. Here is the exact link:

Darren Dreger
‏@DarrenDreger 12m Follow Following Unfollow Blocked Unblock Pending Cancel Expect the Penguins to announce Sidney Crosby's contract extension on Sunday. Over $100 million dollars with an AAV of close to $9 mil per.

LeBrun reporting 12 or 13-year, front-loaded deal. Perhaps that's why we don't want to front load any UFA contracts since it'll be a lot of salary to pay out in the first few years in addition to Sid's. If that AAV reported is accurate (and I'm sure it's probably 8.7M), then what a steal!

So happy right now.

Heh. There are some actually questioning whether it was a good deal for the Pen at that reported cap hit. Like every other team in the league would not be lining up to offer more if he went UFA.

1. Knickers in a twist was a joke (hence the smilie chosen)
2. I think that he tweeted it 30 minutes ago is what has people excited.

Yeah, but Yohe, Rossi, and Madden said the Pens are going to have a harder time landing Parise and Suter because they NEVER front load deals.

Great move by the Pens if true. Not that I didn't believe that Sid would re-sign with the team, but they basically have a full year to sign Sid. I think they want to make sure that all potential UFA targets know that Sid will be with the team for a long time.

Burkle has the cash to back any front loaded contract.

Anyway, seems a pretty neat selling point to the top UFA's they're likely to court to put this one out at noon Sunday.

Worried about your teams long term future? Worried about the making financial commitments? Worried about them spending to win?
Well, come on over.

WPXI reporting 10 years 100 mil.

They must of just picked those numbers because the math was easier.

Well, there's a big difference between that and 'close to 9'.
