Sid's paycut alone almost covers Malkin's contract. Sid just gave the Pens enough to play with for whatever we want.

We are MORE than fine.

Geno will have a deal almost identical to Sids.

True. It's just funny because the reason the hit is so high is because Teddy was "buying out his UFA years." Well if the cap drops and then flattens out, Teddy vastly overpaid for those UFA years. We just bought all of Sid's career essentially for no raise. I can believe he would take a similar deal, but I didn't think it'd happen.

Honestly, I would be shocked if Malkin doesn't sign the same exact deal. It's well reported that he loves it here and doesn't like being in the spotlight. Even though the Pens are kind of suggesting (read: forcing) him to step forward and do more interviews now.

Sid is the best in the game. I am shocked he signed for 12 years after last years talk of him retiring? Hopefully we can have this kind of turnaround with Pronger. However, I think Pronger's career is over like Primeau before him.

I hope Sid stays healthy and we have 12 years of Crosby versus Giroux. I hope we win all 12, but I don't wish i'll health on the kid. Congrats Pens nation.

You have any more party songs ChiChi? I'm in the mood for it.

Watching the Flyers board call this a bad move is just hilarious.

What a guy. Staying at the same cap hit...with the cap rising since his initial deal, this is even a better deal for the pens than when he signed his last contract.

Now let's get him Parise!

He said repeatedly last time around that he didn't feel he deserved more money than Sid, and that he'd sign for a similar number. Can't see it being much different this time around.

Nice to be able to announce this kind of deal just before the FA period! This certainly won't make Pittsburgh a less attractive destination for free agents.

Astonishingly good deal for us.

The trade board makes me laugh though because they're saying it's a risky contract. Every contract is risky. It's conceited jealousy.

The ONLY thing that might make a problem is the new CBA, as people think it will set a maximum contract term. If that happens, it gets a little tricky. On the one hand, I can't see Geno getting a little more. On the other hand, what he might do is just sign for another 4 years, in which case he'd be 31 when his deal expires. Then, he signs for another 6 years. Something like that, where there's an understanding between player and organization and where the first short deal expires when Geno still is in his prime (and the Pens have an incentive to keep their word). Frankly, I'm not worried. Someone else . . . maybe. Not Geno . . .

What happens if Sid has a career ending concussion 3 years into the contract? It's a risk, but he's worth it.

That type of **** makes MrBurgundy's recent lack of faith tolerable. This is a day to celebrate, period. After that, hockey is a risk for anyone, period.

I'm hoping the conversation goes like this:

Malkin: Sid superstitious about number. Geno best, two years Russian Super League. 7.1 million.

Shero: Sign here please.

I still believe there will be an amnesty clause in the new CBA, but that's another issue.

If there was ever a time to get wasted out of pure joy, now is that time.

Pretty sure 29 others team are willing to take that risk if we aren't.

What happens if Geno goes out and takes a stick to the eye? Hockey is a risk sport, sometimes you have to take a risk to see a payoff.

Glad the Pens are confident in Sid's ability to withstand his recent injury problems and perform well into the future.

Someone from ESPN can't add. This makes it MORE likely Malkin stays.

He probably will take the same type of deal, but will upstage Sid by making his hit $7.1M for one extra year beyond Sid.

Seriously. Sid just forwent his raise entirely. That is money saved. Geno could now actually take a raise if he wanted to, beyond what people initially expected. I don't think he WILL... I think Geno will follow Sid's lead just as he did before, because that's the type of player and person he is. Geno wants Cups, period. The only difference might be term.

The real question is can they handle THREE guys in that ballpark (Parise).

$8.7M
$8.7M
and Parise will be close to $8M IMO.
