Erik Johnson News

Sorry if this was already known

Quote:
Andy Strickland ‏@andystrickland

Erik Johnson won't be re-signing with Colorado until July 1st at the earliest #avs #stlblues

UPDATE:

And here is why i guess:

Quote:
Andy Strickland ‏@andystrickland

Per CBA RFA's can't sign until July first hence Erik Johnson having to wait. No deal is imminent as of today #avs

I think he's out to lunch.

I believe the rule is players CURRENTLY SIGNED, cannot sign a contract extention if they have MORE than 1 year left on their current deal (or something to the effect).

So if Johnson was signed through to next season, he wouldn't be able to sign until after July 1st when there is less than one year left on his contract. (Valid for players with 2 year contracts or more)

I may be wrong here but this is the first time I've heard of an RFA needing to WAIT to re-sign with the same team. Duchene re-signed last week and he was an RFA.

Can you elaborate on this? I don't get the meaning. It's like saying "this thread is athletic" ??

Apparently, per Strickland, RFAs that received a qualifying offer can't be signed until July 1st. Duchene actually signed before receiving a qualifying offer.

So that's the rule apparently.

Sounds like he is looking for an offer-sheet. However, I would be shocked if he gets one that Colorado wouldn't match.

That still isn't right. Players cannot elect to accept the qualifying offer before July 1st. There's no prohibition on the team and player signing a contract before then though.

For example Nikita Nikatin of Columbus just signed today after being qualified earlier.

Thanks for the input.

Does seem like something is weird with what Strickland is reporting...

Don't be shocked if it turns out the Philadelphia Flyers are going after him.

They can try all they want but there is no way that they get him.

Doesn't this just suggest that his camp is, perhaps, trolling for an offer sheet to boost negotiations?

"Avs report Johnson won't sign."........

"Until he's allowed to."

"Crosby won't accept 9 mil cap hit"

"Prefers it to be 8.7 mil."

I'm not even sure it does that. The Avs have yet to come to terms with ROR either, so there's no reason to believe anything weird is going on.

I think you missed the point...as far as anyone can figure, he is allowed to sign right now. The claim that, as per the CBA, he has to wait until July 1 is what has everyone confused...

I guess the question, then, is what makes this news-worthy--as opposed to every other RFA?

Maybe some Avs fans can help out the rest of us? Is there something particularly significant about the delay?
