As I said in another thread, not sure if Arnott would come to Toronto. He's nearing retirement (presumably) and may be looking for a couple of shots at a Cup.

Bouwmeester isn't a crazy contract to take back, since it is only two years. Would also give us a legitimate top pairing on D finally.

Calgary would have to take a soft deal, but it is worth exploring.
I dont think we are in the running for Bouwmeester tbh. He can be an impact defensemen but with Phaneuf here I dont think so.

Matt Carle going to free agency.

Should the Leafs make a pitch?

Nope. Our D is full as it is, with several young guys ready to make the jump.

Definately. 5 for 5 would be good.

Luongo or Bernier

Since Vancouver is asking for an arm and a leg why not pick up Bernier for mere draft picks and a prospect...cheaper price to get and cheaper cap hit???

You need a legit partner for Phaneuf, and Carle is exactly that.

Doubt he signs for less than Wideman. Carle is underrated: advanced stats are pretty fantastic.

LA was asking for a high price at the deadline, but if they are more reasonable this time around, I'd be interested.

I agree , people are going to say he is unproven. But would like a shot at him . I think he would look good in the blue an white for years and Reiner and him might turn out to be great goalies and you get a rerun on one in the future

1. Doesn't need its own thread. There's a speculation/proposal sticky at the top of the page. I'm not trying to be an ass, but the number of threads being started recently is brutal.
2. Bernier has proved nothing in this league. He's got skill but still a risk.
3. "Mere" draft picks. I assure you, Luongo could be had for mere draft picks as well but it's the quality and quantity of the draft picks needed.

I think I covered everything?

L.A. isn't about to get rid of Bernier unless they get blown away with an offer. I'm not sure that it wouldn't take just as much to pry him away as Luongo at this point.

Not really. With Quick locked up and Bernier asking for trade it's much more likely that a reasonable offer would suffice and they won't necessarily hold back until they are "blown away"

Were Bouwmeester and Phaneuf paired together in Calgary? Jay honestly seems like he'd be a great partner for Dion. I wouldn't be totally against this deal if we could unload some cap back at them, Lombardi perhaps.

I don't think Burke will want Bernier. He has said many times now how he is comfortable with Reimer in net next season and how he hasn't given up on him yet.

If he does get a goalie, I think it will be more of a veteran, experienced goalie who can carry some of the weight off of Reimer.

Getting a guy like Bernier would be a big slap in the face to Optimus, and would lower his morale.

Matt Carle would be an excellent addition, can't believe Philadelphia isn't re-signing him (must be going hard for Suter). He's far and away the best offensive defender on the market and his advanced defensive stats are pretty decent as well. He is definitely a #2 defenseman.

The reason we can't sign him though is because he's going to get between $5.0-$6.0M in this market thanks to guys like Wideman and Wisniewski and Liles. Why pay that premium when you can sign a Justin Schultz? Or when you already have a glut of defenders coming up in the next few years? This only makes sense if Komisarek is jettisoned and even then its a stretch.

I've heard that quote to but I believe he meant, 'size is on the way in the next few years due to our drafting but in the mean time hopefully we can maybe get some here sooner'.

Yea Burke most defiantly meant size is coming 'through the system'.

I'd take on Bouwmeester's contract if it got us a kid like Backlund. Similar to the Lupul deal. Send Lombo and a defenseman the other way.

Edit: Nvm. It appears that Jokinen will be testing FA which means Backlund is likely to be a flame. Still...we could get a 1st round pick out of it probably, and you know how keen those Calgarians are on the rebuilding process. Shedding some of that cap space should allow them to go after some of the big ticket names they 'think' they're actually going to get.
