Love it! Much needed depth. Great leader with a ring.

Gill-Ellis will be an awesome 3rd pairing.

Excellent. Now if Suter will just sign it sounds like the D is pretty well set for next year.

For that price, I can't complain at all. Good start to the FA period, let's hope that it continues!

Great $ and term. Gill was a big part of the PK when he was brought in.

I suspect the extra year is what sealed the deal.

Very happy; my only concern with re-signing Gill after the season was on the potential price, but I have no complaints about $2M per. I imagine he took a bit of a discount to add the extra year to the contract.

I bet it came down to a 1 year deal at 3 mil or a 2 year deak at 2 mil. I'll take this one, thank you very much.

As long as you pair him with a mobile partner, I think he's pretty solid. I think he also did wonders for Josi's development at the end of last season. Having a 12 foot stick is helpful on the PK as well.

Why, because he's four inches taller? That doesn't make him exponentially better.

Gill will be used in a limited role as a good positional defender and PK specialist who can handle big forwards in the middle of the ice. What does O'Brien do? He plays a limited role as a good positional defender and PK specialist who can handle big forwards in the middle of the ice.

O'Brien tends to be a little too hands-on at times and ends up in the box as a result, but there really isn't a huge gulf between him and Gill. Both played well for their respective clubs in similar capacities, and both have earned their money.

You answered your own pondering here. O'brien is in the box too much when he's supposed to be on the pk.

Edit: Also, great $ for Gill...I was thinking we'd have to toss about 2.5 at him for him to stay but to wrap him up for 2 is icing on the cake gives us more room to use on a Center/LW combo

are you crapping me?

Gill is only third pair on the preds because we have Suter and Weber.... he'd be a top 4 on many teams

plus IMHO SOB is below 3rd pair status.... I think he's incredibly lucky to have a contract at all... although I'll admit I am basing that on his play here maybe he was more inpressive in Colorado...

I think it primarily comes down to discipline. Given the very real possibility that we might be icing Ellis, Blum, and Josi (not as worried about Roman) on the blueline next year, having a stay at home veteran D presence who doesn't take a lot of penalties and can eat minutes on the PK is huge.

SoB can't eat minutes on the PK because he's the reason you're on the PK in the first place. Bit of an exaggeration, but I'd rather pay $2M for Gill than $2M for SoB.

Add in the intangibles of Gill's game: being a steady locker room guy, a great mentor-type for the youngsters, and he has Cup experience. O'Brien may physically be comparable to Gill in the on-ice role they are slotted for, but he's not comparable in the other aspects of the game that make Gill so valuable.

Great signing. 2 million/2yrs is a great deal on a solid veteran defenseman who is a great leader and will mentor our young D. I agree that he did wonders for Josi and he'll do the same with Ellis. Gill is also a very vocal leader and has won the cup which will be great for the team.

Meh, good price and term for a 3rd pairing guy. Color me unimpressed with his performance when he came on board here (I know he was injured, but still). Color me unimpressed with all the deadline acquisitions for that matter.
