No, unless you think Sarich will play top four minutes (he shouldn't).

More likely this opens the door for a Babchuk trade or his release to Europe.

I'm not happy with this at all. Butler, Brodie, Smith are more promising and will need minutes.

Dont know where all the hate is coming from.

Brodie really came onto scene when he was paired with Sarich

Where does this leave Derek Smith though...

Need to earn minutes, I think you mean?

Butler will get top four minutes. Brodie might see top four minutes with PP time. Smith is a fine utility guy but isn't exactly a prospect and is basically an AHL tweener.

Sarich will get bottom pairing time, possibly some PK time, but he won't have top four minutes.

i do not think it is a very good deal, and Feaster could've gotten someone younger and better for a better deal.
He's not Seabrook but it's at 2mil u can't expect an elite dman at that price.

The cap hit is a little high, but still a good deal. I'm surprised he was willing to re-sign.

The Flames have 9 defensemen on 1-way contracts now plus Brodie; there's a deal coming.

Bouwmeester-Butler
Giordano-Wideman
Sarich-Brodie
Babchuk-Smith
Carson-Wilson

I really hope we're not lining up a trade of Jaybo for futures... I'd imagine they would be willing to pay Carson and Wilson their money in the minors (unless they buyout Carson soon).

And likely Babchuk gets jettisoned for whatever they can get, for better or worse.

Carson & Wilson will play in the AHL again next season. Smith will play spot duty as the 7th defenseman. Babchuk will be traded, waived, or sent to Europe. That leaves your top six intact.

Sarich will have to earn minutes too, and I wouldn't want 2 million + Bab's 2.5 million to sit in the press box because Connelly, Brodie, Smith, and Butler is faster, able to keep up, and simply more useful.

It's a lot of money for a 5th/6th defensemen when our young guys have more potential and possibly a higher ceiling. We know Sarich's ceiling and it isn't high.

What about a deal to Anaheim for Bobby Ryan? (Bouwmeester I mean)

Agreed. Carson and Wilson are AHL guys that can fill in in a pinch on the big club.

Smith is a guy that can push players like Butler, Brodie, even Sarich to make sure that everyone's playing to their best ability.

How anyone heard any news on Connelly at all? I really want him to be brought back on a 2 year deal.

Pat Steinberg ‏@Fan960Steinberg For those asking, Sarich has a limited no trade clause in his contract. No clauses for either Stempniak nor Jones. #Flames
No clauses for Stempniak and Jones; small victories I guess.

Sarich's limited NTC is for the first season of his contract.

Don't care about the NTC, would have preferred to let Sarich go but he could be a great partner for Brodie.

After the smoke has settled i'm ok with this. Sarich will bring that physical element, drop the gloves and lay down the big hit. On a bottom pairing with Brodie, Sarich can let Brodie continue to play his way, but maybe teach a thing or two about the physical side of the game.

Nothing. Agreed, could be another Smith. If not we could use the AHL depth.

EDIT:
This is just speculation by me, so probably wrong. I follow Connelly on twitter and he seems like he is very good friends with players from Rockford/Chicago like Morin, Hayes, Smith, Hutton, Stanton, Beach, etc. I wouldnt be surprised if he signs with Chicago again.

Actually Butler will play the first pairing minutes with Jbo. And Brodie and Smith will have to fight it out for that last spot wich is good because a spot for the new guys should be earned not just handed over.

Actually, I'm pretty content with the Sarich signing. I hated him last year, simply because that contract was brutal a dozen different ways.

Bouwmeester - Butler
Giordano - Wideman
Brodie - Sarich
7 - Smith

Gives one of the kids Smith/Brodie a pure defensive partner. Allows them to engage more in the offence and know that there will be a guy covering.
Anyone think that our second pairing is going to be the most physical? Wideman hits people, a lot of people don't like to acknowledge it.

I see Babs going to a team that can't reach the floor. Wilson + Carson will be the AHL guys who baring major NHL injury (which happened last year) won't be up here.

Also, quick hitter. Anyone else realize that removing the Bruins game this past season, Butler's play/stats is actually pretty impressive?

At 27, Smith is still considered a "kid"?

Relativity seems to be critical here as posters just reiterate what TSN types say. Egad Anyone under 30 seems to be a kid these days... maybe 40 is the new 30?

I like this move a lot. Sarich is tough as nails and the only reason people had hateb on for him was his salary. He know makes around half what he did last season. There is tons of cap space and I hope no D go out the door.
