The plot thickens. Wonder if GMCF will be going up to wherever he is to talk to him at some point.

He writes for the Wisconsin SB Nation site and has been all over the Schultz story.

Yes although the Schultz camp is keeping things very very close to the chest.

It doesnt sound like anybody is getting much information out of the Schultz camp, but IMO if Schwartz says/posts something, I would believe it. Its probably not the best time to make this comparison but Schwartz is pretty much the Badgers Russo.

Well Russo put a kabosh on it pretty fast:

Quote:
n other news, as I've reported, the Wild expressed strong interest in University of Wisconsin free-agent defenseman Justin Schultz, who has refused to sign with Anaheim, the team that drafted him in 2008. TSN's Bob McKenzie tweeted that he's hearing the Wild's on Schultz's short list of six (Edmonton, Vancouver, Toronto, Rangers and Ottawa).

I haven't been told this. The only thing I know is the Wild hasn't been told like other teams they're out of it.

While other teams are reportedly in Toronto waiting to meet face-to-face with Schultz, as of now, that is not the case for the Wild. GM Chuck Fletcher remains in Hilton Head at the AHL Meetings and his plan is to fly back to Minnesota tomorrow.

So still, don't get your hopes up ... yet for the 22-year-old highly-coveted blue-liner. More than two-dozen teams expressed interest in Schultz. I still think Schultz signs north of the border and with a team that promises him a spot next season. Fletcher has always told me in the past he would never promise a prospect a spot on the team, so we'll see what happens.

I think he'll go to Edmonton. They lost Barker and they need a top 4 defenseman immediately. They also don't have a lot on the backend as well.

He'd already changed his tune by the time the chat rolled around today.

While I agree with Russo's take on the situation, you have to understand that Russo knows absolutely nothing about this situation. He didnt even know the Wild were involved until Mckenzie told him.

Agreed. Chuck Schwartz has been closer to the situation (and broken more info) than even Bob McKenzie. If fact, Bob has quoted Chuck a few times.

Not saying the Wild are favorites to land Schultz, but if you're looking for breaking news on that front, Russo isn't the primary guy to follow.

My guess is that he'd like to sign with his hometown Canucks (which is why they're still on his shortlist), but is considering that he'll have a much better opportunity to get good NHL minutes in another city, which is why somewhere like Edmonton or MN is on the list.

I wonder if staying in the NW division and getting to play 3 times in front of family would be a plus in our book. I kinda doubt he goes to the East for that reason, actually.

One of the quotes though rings true; I've never seen Fletcher guarantee a spot on the roster for a prospect. The closest I think is Granlund. If he can't guarantee a spot...then what?

I think someone else said it best. Do you really need to guarantee him a spot in our case? Just show him a depth chart and say, this is your competition. He knows he'll have a prime chance at not only plenty of minutes, but possibly Top 4 minutes here without even having to ask.

Kelowna is (as the crow flies) about the same distance from Calgary as it is from Vancouver. However, I guess that mountain range might make it a fair bit quicker to get to Van City. They'll probably be flying wherever they go to see him play.

Does he need to? Like, really, what are the odds of Schultz being cut in favor of someone from Houston?

Well in the battle of bad defenses, I like our chances.

But against Eddy? Well, I would say advantage: edmonton if the decision goes to who has the worst defense.

But good god our defense would be beastly this year if we somehow get Schultz AND Suter.

I don't think the defense would be THAT good this year but would improve signifantly.

Agreed....people need to remember that Schultz will still be a rookie and prone to making rookie mistakes. The WCHA is not the NHL.

While Schultz might be inclined to go to a team with "bad defense" so he can get get a top 4 spot, there's a limit. He still wants his team to be able to win, so it doesn't really make sense to play somewhere where Barker was playing on the top pairing last year. I think Ottawa is still the best fit in that way, has 3 clear top 4 defensemen, and one to compete with for that 4th spot. All but guaranteed a spot in the NHL, but the team made the playoffs and should be on the upswing going forward.

Pretty good actually, if we bring in Suter.

The decision will come down to Brodin or Schultz?

I think Schultz would win. After all he is 3 years older.

If he signs here he will get to play in Canada quite a bit; at least until realignment.
