Tambellini isn't going to be doling out any longterm lucrative contracts tomorrow.
I hope not. I'm worried management will go out and sign our version of Brian Campbell to a ridiculous contract that will force us to trade one of the kids prematurely. If it was Suter that might be palatable, but if it's someone like Carle I'm going to lose my mind.
Suter's agent is Neil Sheehy. I can't imagine Sheehy steering a client that he represents toward the Oil. I dunno. I might be out to lunch here, but I just can't imagine a world where this might happen. Edmonton was public enemy no. 1 when Sheehy played for the Flames, during one of the most intense rivalries in NHL history. I would love to see Suter an Oiler, but given Sheehy and Ryan's uncle Gary's history with the Flames, I just can't imagine it happening. Again, I'd love it, and it would be a great situation for Suter, but it just doesn't seem too plausible given the history there.
Dude, that's not going to be in anyway the reason if the Oil make a pitch and he turns it down. These are grown up's, on ice rivalries that happened 20+ years ago are long gone and have nothing to do with Ryan.
Personally I think the Oilers may not make big moves on July 1st. They are going with an internal development strategy and focusing on a boys on the bus 2.0 model after adding Yakupov and Schultz.
I personally doubt they go out and get any big names like Suter (never a realistic target anyway) or Carle or any top forward either.
I think they must be pretty happy overall with what they have now and want to build on developing internal competition and development.
You need to leave some room there for developing dmen like Klefbom/Gernat/Musil/Marincin/Fedun/Teubert etc to have hope when they work towards getting onto that roster. Adding more dmen from outside the org with "longish" terms would somewhat defeat that internal development path.
Same goes for the forwards... it's getting to be a logjam already and you need room for guys like MPS/Hartikainen/Pitlick/Hamilton etc to have hope of coming up to the big team.
I personally would like to see them reward the home grown and internally developed talent from OKC instead of looking for many more UFA talents.
Saying that, I could see a trade possibility to shift an excess of what the Oilers have now for something that fills a hole as that makes more sense but acquiring a UFA and yet another contract is not really something they really need to do.
Brownlee is tweeting the Oilers are going to take a run at Suter. As they should.
Can't see it working out though. But you still gotta try.
I agree. Top pairing d-men rarely come onto the market. Even though we don't stand a chance of getting him, we still have to try.
If we were to sign him, it would likely require something like Marincin28's idea of this contract.
Year one 14M - with a large signing bonus in case of lockout.
Year two 14M
Year three 14M
Year four 7M
Year five 7M
Year six 7M
Year seven 3.5
Year eight 3.5M
Year nine 3.5M
Year ten 1.75M
Cap hit 7.525M
I might even try to tack on another year or two @ 1.75 to get the cap hit down a bit more. 1 more year @ 1.75 takes him to 38 and reduces the cap hit to 7M. Another year takes him to 39 and reduces it to a very dealable 6.56M
Doan met with potential Coyotes owner Greg Jamison today and is now claiming that he won't sign with anyone until after July 8th, due the the Coyotes ownership situation. Speculation is that after July 8th there will be a pretty good understanding on whether the Coyotes stay in Phoenix or head up north to la belle province (Quebec, for those who didn't pay attention in French class)
There's a link in the main forums but I'm just about to head out... Look there if you wish to find it.
