I'd say with the Schultz addition, Edmonton is now 12th in the West. Better than Anaheim, Minnesota or Columbus.

We have to get better or we are finishing in 12th. Improvement? Yes. But not a playoff team.

Yeah, let's roll with the same defense as last year (worst in the league btw) and hope Schultz is the saviour....

I'd much rather bring in another solid guy and slowly work Schultz up (3rd pairing, soft minutes, #1 power play time)
The Oilers were not the worst defense in the NHL.

Is this a joke. I don't want anything to do with that overpaid defenseman. Teams that have JBou always miss the playoffs.

LOL. Now we know why Calgary is in trouble.

Doubt the Oilers are on Nash's list since Ottawa isn't on his list.

No thanks. LA wants a first round pick for Bernier.

Didn't Belanger say the same thing last season when the Oilers signed him.

Don't have a natural LW in the top-6 so it probably wouldn't work!
Why trade a centre and then move a player from LW to C.

No he's saying that you shouldn't move a LW to C and trade a C.

Parros wanted a 2-year contract the Oilers most likely only wanted to give him a 1-year deal.

We've got too many players as it is. Shipping several out in a package for a better player can work out better and create more openings. Simply adding more bodies may not be the best solution.

The Oilers might be content to just see if Peckham can get back to where he was 2 seasons ago, when he was looking like at minimum a great bottom pairing guy. Two seasons ago he looked to be about on par with Smid, look at the leap Smid made in one season.

I'd give Carle 5 mill LOOOONG before I ever gave Garrison 5 mill. I feel a lot more comfortable with the bigger sample size of success with Carle.

Have no idea if we are in on either of them, but we could potentially keep an eye on the Flyers D situation. If they spend big money on Suter, which of them will be expendable?

Agreed although I think we'd end up regretting either in a few years.

At some point though we need to give that type of money to SOMEONE.

Keep in mind, if Whitney isn't right again this year and has issues, we would likely not re-sign him so that would free up quite a bit of money.

Essentially we would only be adding like a million to our current cap if we let him walk.

A guy like Carle can bring some of the offense but can also defend, which is nice.

It's also unclear what they plan to do with Nick Schultz as well.

I don't have a problem with not making an offer to Suter. His rumoured contract demands are preposterous and I hope that the Red Wings don't bite.

Let's just be patient. Signing guys to long term contracts for marginal players is how you screw yourself in a salary cap Era.

Not really. Apparently, Krueger has the two Schultz's slotted together as a pairing already.

I have a feeling that we will be making one more move this off season (minus the rfa signings) A trade packaging MPS and Hemsky. (Seabrook?) Once the Blackhawks sign Carle. Or something similar

Oh so very Unlikely, but oh how happy that would make me. Especially if we found a way to sign Doan to replace veteran presence of Hemmer upfront.

That would be a solid pairing IMO, should play well with a steady guy like that.

I meant it's unclear what they plan to do with Whitney and Schultz long-term, unless they plan to re-sign both of them.

If Whitney is still hurt, I'd rather keep Nick long-term and sign someone to replace Whitney, which is why I wouldn't mind Carle.

Not willing to overpay though, I would 5/25 for Carle.

That would surely complete the rebuild. (Banking on Dubynk continued improvement) Point being, we need to send out a couple of bodies, NOT sign anymore free agents. We now have the assets imo. Seabrook obviously is just an example of the calibre of player we need.

Honestly, I'm kind of glad Tambo isn't getting involved in most of these contracts. These are NBA type contracts with too much money going towards average players.

I think that Nick Schultz has a future here... Whitney... as much as I like the guy... he might not. 2012/2013 is huge for him.

And yeah, I took a 'lil shot at Tambi after Allen signed with Anaheim but the numbers being doled out are ridiculous. Even with the cap at 70 million. With the uncertainty around the CBA it's awful that GMs are being so easy peasy with their contract offers.

before we add any more d-men we will need to move one or two IMO

Schultz
Schultz
Petry
Whitney
Smid

is a good start

With 4 other guys fighting over the lat spot. I have love Petry since I saw him play uni, obviously new Schultz is an upgrade, Smid is Lowe 2.0--so that leaves old Schultz who is still fairly new Schultz, Whitney. Potter, Peckham, Sutton. Teubert and a few other kids running around that maybe worthy of getting a cup of coffee every now and then.

For me the top 5 are set. 7th spot is between Peckham (who could blossom into Matt Greene 2.0), Potter, and Sutton. The 6th spot could be a spot where guys like Teubet, Musil, Plante, Fedun and Marincin could be rotated up and down from the farm to get loojss at in ten game steatched(Not sure if Musil will be in the A or back in juniors next year) and then in 2013/2014 we get Klefbom into the line up--with Whitney, Smids and Sutton's contracts off the books. Sutton will be replaced ( he will find an assistant coaching job somewhere). So before we start handing out 3 year deal to guys on the blue line--we need to look at what kind of shape the line looks like over the next few years.

oilers D in 2014/2015--COULD LOOK LIKE

Justin Schultx
Klefbom
Smid (resigned)
Teubert
Petry
Plante, Marcinin, Musil or Fedun

The biggest hole the oilers had was the blue chipper on the D and that was filled yesterday, I have seen Klefbom play and think he could be one hell of an NHL d-man if he can play on the smaller ice surface. And we have all these young D-men running around that will be banging at the doors shortly. Next year the discussion will be do we resign Whitney? Whitny right now is out number 1 d-man and in a years time could be number 3--he could be the prefect transition player for the d-line we talk about
