The last time R.J. Gicewicz participated in an international hockey tournament, he wondered if he truly had laced them up against the best players from abroad in his age group.
No such thoughts will cross his mind by the end of this week. The 15-year-old Nichols sophomore will know where he stands and just how much more work he'll need to do in order to earn future opportunities at representing Old Glory.
Gicewicz is one of seven defensemen who will skate for Team USA's Under-17 Select team in the Five Nations Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich. The U.S. opens play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube against the Czech Republic. The five-day tournament, which also includes Germany, Slovakia and Switzerland, will be streamed online at USAHockey.FASTHockey.com.
"There's not too much pressure on me," said Gicewicz, who lives in Orchard Park and also plays for the Buffalo Saints. "I'm trying to go out there and make a name for myself, do my thing and just play how I got there."
Looks like he's a 2014 draft eligible kid that is slated to head to SLU(t) in 2013-14.
