Agent Wars: Who is Newport Management

I am trying to assess the baffling process and final decision of Justin Schultz and his agent (Newport Management) to abandon all reason and play for a perennial loser. Sorry, I wish it weren't true because I truly like the Oilers but their losing is not going to change with one offensive D man signing there; imagine a shrinking salary Cap, the demands on the second contracts of all their young players and all of their serious injuries when they enter the league. In the salary cap era, their current demographics is a formula for continued failure. Forgetting that Schultz is the first UFA in memory to commit to wandering around the WEM during snow storms waiting for the roads to be cleared, I think it is interesting to note that Winters (aptly named as he is based in Edmonton) has commented on Justin's agent as follows, "Don Meehan’s puppy mill at Newport Sports – known by all as the best recruiters and worst agents in hockey". (http://www.theagentsofchange.com/201...nds-press.html) I wonder if the Newport purposely isolated the kid far away from home for 5 days in Toronto where he was indoctrinated with the agent's take on maximizing his earning capacity by lowering the threshold for achieving bonuses and maximizing the second contract value, thereby turned him away from better short and long term opportunities. Newport helped negotiate a contract that helps maximize the agents earnings but does it really help the kid and his family if he is prairies and mountains away from places he could have double or triple his earnings from endorsements contracts, presumably Meehan doesn't get a chunk of this for simply negotiating a playing contract. Schultz could have been very wealthy by Christmas if had chosen NY or TO but would Newport benefit from this?

In addition, it is interesting to note that GMMG and Meehan have had a vendetta since the last lockout, GMMG apparently wanted his players under management playing and earning income while Meehan was happy to stick it to the owners for another year just to avoid the implementation of the salary cap, which likely explains why Meehan's arch client and former NHLPA president Trevor Linden does not pitch for the Canucks. It would also be interesting to know how and why CoHo left Newport and if the GMMG had a hand in this. Regardless, with an epidemic of player entitlement (CoHo, and Schultz both Newport Clients at the time of their first contracts) it was intriguing to see that the Canucks would not risk turning the team into a collection of gulags in order to meet one player's demands on playing time so he can secure his bonuses. You don't think that Bieska's twitter comment during the Schultz negotiation didn't have a double meaning directed at Schultz, "Congrats in order to Cory! Great teammate that has worked hard for his opportunities. "http://twitter.com/#!/kbieksa3

Overall it appears that first the Ducks and then the Canucks left much to chance, like allowing MacT and his intimate knowledge of the Canuck organization, to join the Oilers in advance of July 1, the player seemed to have been brainwashed by Newport into years of suffrage and finally, the vendetta appears to be rekindled between Newport and other agents and GMs.

Lesson to players and parents: choose your agents wisely or they will be calling the shots and you'll be taking long walks in the snow and using a block heater to start your car instead of lounging by the beach in SoCal.
