Cheerleaders are ridiculous in every sport that isnt Cheerleading.
And what exactly would be the purpose of cheerleading if they weren't cheering anyone (players or teams)?

Especially since A) it actually costs money to make the jerseys and B) not every single jersey that's made is going to sell. And like someone else pointed out it's also in many cases less money spent on 'traditional' jerseys anyway so it's more or less just shifting revenue in some cases. It's a nice little profit maker but saying third jerseys are going to clear $20 million or anything near it is ludicrous.

At least half the league has them in some form or another, cheerleaders or "Ice Girls". I didn't hear or read a word from the Canadian media (boogeyman!) on the subject, and I tend to consume a fair bit of hockey media north of the 49th. I could take them or leave them, don't need them to enjoy a hockey game myself, but I have no objections to admiring a group of gyrating attractive women during a break in the action either.

Stu Hackel address the financial issue:

http://nhl-red-light.si.com/2012/08/...sct=nhl_t11_a0

What I found interesting is an answer that Stu posted in the comments section to a question someone asked about a comparison to what the Thrashers went through:

"It's different from the Devils' situation. NJ has had great success on the ice, and some moderate success financially over the years. They have a fan base that is more sizable than the Thrashers and, under the right circumstances, could probably succeed financially in their Newark arena. They also have a myriad of issues with respect to their ownership that differ from Atlanta. There are people who supposedly would like to own the club and keep them there, but they don't want to be minority owners and right now, Mr. Vanderbeek is not selling his share. So they will have to wait around to see if circumstances force him to change his mind or force him into bankruptcy at which point they might be able to pounce on it."

Didn't Kosman report that it looked like VBK had a deal but then something came out a couple weeks later that he is looking for a BETTER deal?

Unless Hackel is being a hack and just using Pagnotta's tweet as basis for his story, it would lend credence to the idea that VBK found a buyer that would keep him as a member of ownership, just not in charge...or buy him out completely.

I would think being bought out for $50M (just tossing a # out there) and not having to pay $80M is win-win

Not the solution but one of the many problems that have led to this. Like I've said a thousand times. Great job on the ice but this is the worst run organization in pro sports off the ice. With the amount of success this team's had if they even attempted to market this team, look out. But Lou's philosophy of "if you build it they will come" has prevailed for his entire tenure and has cost the team tens of millions. I still reference that Saturday afternoon at the Meadowlands when over 6k showed up for the draft party after the strike and the line was around the arena. The fans have always been here.

If the fans have always been there, why the need to market? Sounds like Lou's philosphy of "build it and they will come" was correct if "The fans have always been there.

What do you expect them to do? I have seen more Devils marketing in the last 5 years than I have jets, giants and net combined and In my opinion it is a waste of resources and money. The pool of fans we are slecting from is tiny. Not only is it a tiny pool, but on top of that it is highly competitive....That is the nature of being the 4th sometimes 5th sport in the region. Market until the cows come home hockey will still be a niche sport.

Was in the beginning, and still am sticking to my belief that bankruptcy is the most logical conclusion.

Two free ticket vouchers and a complementary hot dog and soda had a lot to do with that crowd.

But that's the thing...I see more tv, radio and print ads for Devils tickets than I ever have...not to mention social media and email/internet campaigns.

The devils marketing is probably at an all time high in the history of the franchise right now and strictly from attendance it doesn't seem to be making much of a difference. There just aren't that many hockey fans.

I also didn't include Philadelphia teams. With all of which the Devils share territory.
