Penguins Re-Sign Goaltender Brad Thiessen (1 year | $525,000)

Penguins Re-Sign Goaltender Brad Thiessen

Quote:
The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed goaltender Brad Thiessen to a one-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.

Thiessen’s contract is a two-way deal worth $525,000 at the NHL level.
Like Molinari said on twitter this is somewhat of a surprise.

Why the suprise? An AHL signing, he's been doing good with the baby pens. Had a down year this last season but he's been fair otherwise.

I expected him to go somewhere where he'd have a better shot of cracking the NHL roster.

Same contract as least season. Surprised he stayed and didn't try to find a team with a better chance at making the NHL. But well, he didn't have the best season, maybe he hopes to cash in better next summer after having a rebound year?

Fair enough. My best guess would be after the debacle from his call up and games he figured he needs to get back to his game, giving him self one more year in an organisation that's willing to keep him, in order to give him self the best possible chance of cracking and sticking to an NHL roster.

Speculation of course, but it'd make sense to me.

Expected, as I highly doubted that NHL teams would be lining up for his services after below average year for him. He's a good goalie and will rebound, hopefully he stays in the system.

Likewise...but he wasn't going to do better than third stringer anyway after last year and Vokoun is coming off an injury...so staying in the comfort zone while comfortably being in that three spot isn't so bad.

Glad to have him back, even gladder to have a better guy ahead of him on the depth chart.

I'm not surprised we would want him back, I am a little surprised he would come back with the road to the NHL blocked in this organization for any goaltender for the next two years.

On the other hand, his NHL stock is the lowest it's been thanks to the season he had, and he'd need to prove himself once more in the AHL no matter where he went. And the Pens goaltending depth chart is very top heavy with the starting job in Wilkes-Barre sitting there giftwrapped. May as well attempt his bounce back season here.

Not surprised. Undrafted kid, coming off a down season in the AHL and didn't show much in the NHL call-ups. Probably not a lot of demand for this guy around the league.

Curious decision by Thiessen, but I'm fine with it.

Guess he prefers to stay in the organization that recruited and developed him over getting lost in the shuffle of some other team.

And, the goalie market is flooded right now anyway, so teams don't need to scrape the bottom of the barrel to try to find quality, NHL goaltenders. 2 years ago, it seemed Thiessen might be that guy, but last year raised serious doubt. So if he's going to have to earn his chance after another (hopefully good) season in the AHL, might as well do it with a team that he's familiar with and is likely to be very strong next year in WBS.

On that note, it is a good signing for WBS. They should be solid in goal, really strong on D, and have a talented crop of forwards coming in. If they can bring in one or two veteran forwards to round things out, they could be a really good team next year and make a run.

Well that wraps it up. Shero can put away the checkbook and wait for October.

That'll be Johnson out then.

He's an AHL goaltender now is Thiessen.

Johnson was out six months ago. There's no connection to Johnson here.

Career AHLer most likely. Might see a few injury games here or there over a couple seasons.

I'm pretty high on Thessien. He got lit up here but that was just before we started realizing how bad our D was. Eventually BJ started looking like **** and then it blew up in the Playoffs and even MAF looked like swiss cheese. Solid prospect.

Thiessen was actually solid during his first couple of starts. He didn't start to get lit up until the team quit playing defense. He was solid against Toronto and Columbus.

The guy just doesn't pass the eye test to me. He looks about as big as a 13 year old kid in the net.

Time will tell.

He's still a solid AHL goaltender.

Good for the baby Pens. I just don't think he has the size or athleticism to be an NHL goalie. I hope he proves me wrong.

Theissieve, amirite guise?

He just looks a little too small in the net and without the athleticism to really make up for it. Fleury is described as smallish and he's still got two inches on Theissen. At least he appears to be decent in the A.
