Great deal !

We're technically set on D with Lovejoy and Bortuzzo/Strait being traded soon.

So if we sign ANY Dman tomorrow, Martin will be gone.

It's really $2.1 this year and $2.5 next year but Cap hit remains the same.

He was probably their second best defenseman last year so I love the deal.

I'm a little surprised, I figured they were going to wait and see how everything else turned out before committing to Niskanen.

We can't assume Martin is going anywhere based on Shero's recent comments. He *might* but it's definitely not a given. I also think we're long-shots for Suter. He's shown no interest in eastern teams AFAWK.

This means, as of now:

Letang-Orpik
Despres-Martin
Engo-Niskanen
Strait

Glad Pittsburgh has turned his career around. He was a throw-in basically for Dallas.

Interesting. I'm certainly happy with it, just a bit perplexed. I figured we would see how things shake out in free agency first. So as of now it looks like:

Letang-Orpik
Nisky-Martin (although I dislike that pairing)
Despres-Engel
Strait/Bort

I'm really torn on which of Strait/Bort I want to see gone. Strait has been more steady overall in the NHL but Bort has the upside and the grit we need.

Awesome deal! I was waiting it to be $2.5M/year, so that's a good signing.

It's just semantics at this point, but I wouldn't be plugging Despres into any second pairing yet. I think it's a safer assumption that Nisky is the 2nd pairing guy until Despres proves otherwise.

Niskanen - Martin is a terrible pairing as 3/4. They're too small. Nisky is not soff like Martin but he's still not a very big guy. You need at least one guy on each pairing who can throw his weight around. IF Niskanen is geared for a 2nd pairing, he won't be with Martin IMO. In that case I guess Martin and Letang could end up together on the 1st pairing.

IFwe can land Suter and Martin is gone, then I'd like these pairings:

Suter - Letang
Orpik - Niskanen
Despres - Engelland

You have to wonder what this means for Martin. If we sign Suter, and a lot of "experts" think we're going to be going after him as much or more than Parise, then Martin's as good as gone.

As it stands now, I'd roll:

Orpik-Letang
Despres-Martin
Niskanen-Engelland
Strait

I think a lot of experts are wrong and missing what's right in front of their face: Suter is not into eastern teams, is offensive minded, will command more than he's probably worth, and we're loaded with offensive D coming down the pike. Parise is Shero's target IMO, and then possibly Bobby Ryan. After that all bets are off. Not saying he won't give Suter an offer but I don't think he's going to throw a huge offer at him.

What's the deal with putting lefties on the right side and righties on the left side, guys?

You would but I doubt Bylsma would. Despres hasn't proved he's a top 4 guy yet (nor has he even made the team). Conservatively speaking, this is the most likely outcome given the players he currently have:

Letang-Martin
Nisky-Orpik
Despres-Engel
Strait

Good deal. Niskanen last year did what I hoped he would - he upped his stock and proved he was a capable player. Glad management isn't trigger happy and stuck by the guy.
