Paul Martin - what does he need to succeed?

Hey,

I know that Paul Martin was a top 4 D-man for you guys and has struggled with the Pens. What would he need to succeed (as in type of system, type of linemate, etc)?

If we were to trade for him, would it be a good idea?

I ask this because I think that some of you guys would know best.

Needs to be sheltered within a defensive system.

More talent.

Paul Martin was always a solid defensemen, but I think what he suffers from most in his career is "overratedness".

A structured system where the forwards help out the D and the goalie makes a save on occasion. Not quite what Pit is known for.

He's not a physical player at all. He can be a bit intimidated by physical play. That said, he is superb in his own zone with the puck on his stick, has decent wheels, can rush the puck, and makes a good breakout pass. He's not a number 1, but he can certainly be a solid 2.

Martin is and always will be a soft puzz bag when dealing with a forecheck...he gets abused in the corners.

Not to mention he's really not a guy you want leading the rush considering his speed is not good. At all. I would get so frustrated watching him ****ing glide through the nz with the puck.

A defensive system that doesn't give up many odd man rushes, and doesn't require him to play physically. He's good positionally, but utterly lacking in physicality.

He also needs a simple breakout scheme, anything that requires long passes isn't going to work.

Not going to echo everyone. Nashville would be a good fit IMO.

I love these predictions about free agents. Scott Gomez would be a 100 point player if he wasn't held back by the Decils system.

There is more and I'm sure we will hear crazy predictions about Zach too.

That is the cycle of life of free agency. These guys agents get them hyped up in the media during the walk year you think they were the next Gretzky and Lemieux. Then because of the compitiveness of July 1 they get over paid and then disappoint.

Uhh....neither. You didn't see the John Tortorella('Torts' is short for his name) press conference after a playoff game against the Devils(I forget which game) where he said that he "Loves his team's balls, loves their jam...."

Trotz

Rinne

Those are fine replacements for 3 of the 4 you listed. As Getzo mentioned, I think he'd do very well in Nashville.

The thing about Martin is that he lacks a PLUS attribute, as scouts call it. Positionally on defense, he's solid enough but not great. As a skater, he's smooth and efficient but doesn't have a great top end. As a physical/gritty defenseman he's quite lacking. Offensively, he's good at making the simple plays - the obvious first pass, jumping into the play if he's already in position, sending/receiving passes, hitting the net - but he isn't a great outlet player, he doesn't have the sixth sense of knowing exactly when to turn up ice to constantly be an attacking threat, he isn't great at finding seams in the offensive zone to send or receive dangerous passes, and he doesn't have a particularly good shot. If I had to give him an attribute that is a PLUS at the NHL level, it's his ability to read the game, but due to his lack of PLUS skills in the aforementioned areas, he's not great enough to utilize his game sense.

Overall he's a competent and at times quite good player, but he's also limited in almost every facet of his game. If he had one great attribute in addition to his current skills and hockey sense, he would be an impact player. If he had elite level skating with his current skillset, he could be a Niedermayer-lite. If he was a better offensive passer, he could be like Brian Campbell (albeit with less skating ability). If he had a better shot he could be like Alex Edler. If he played with a gritty edge he could be like a Kevin Bieksa. But he just lacks that extra dimension in so many different facets of the game that even when he plays a solid game, he often goes overlooked.

He needs a new contract, at a much lower dollar figure, so he doesn't have to attempt to play up to expectations he can never reach.

In terms of defense, the only thing Martin did to impress me was break up breakaways from behind. He was damn good at diving at guys on breakaways and cleanly hitting the puck away.

His lack of physicality prevented him from being a true #1. Now with a meh system and meh teammates, he's a very meh defenseman.
