I believe him. The price is going to be ridiculous and why would either player want to sign here?

This is great news. If Burke is out in that parade he isn't out giving out terrible contracts. Hopefully everyone gets signed before Burke gets back .

Dropped the ball? Anaheim picked up the 12th overall pick in due to the Penner offer sheet, which was the Myers pick and dropped down to grab Gardiner. Karlsson went inbetween those picks as well, so it looks like they did alright for Penner.

It would be pretty tough to beat that one . Everyone knew how bad it was the moment it was signed. Still I don't want Burke to try and beat that contract either .

With Burke's strength being in working trades I would be happy if he passed on second or third rate FA's and wait till the season starts and go down the trade route

So you are suggesting Burke left Penner unsigned hoping someone would offer sheet the player so he could take the first pick. Not the way I heard the story but ok.

Not at all, I'm saying he had the option to match the offer sheet or let him walk. Looks like he made the right move given how Penner has played since he left Anaheim.

Sure 20/20. And at the time however he was more than pissed and thinking about a barn yard tussle.

He wasn't happy about the situation and how Lowe handled it, but he still had the option to match, decided not to and picked up a solid asset. How's that dropping the ball?

Plus they won't be negotiating with players directly, but with their agents so what does it matter if Burke is gone for an hour or so especially when it is for a cause that means so much to him.

The ducks financial/cap position was in flux and the ducks couldn't match like the Sabres did when the oilers gave Vanek an offer sheet.

Haha. Agreed.

But on the most important day of the year for his job, he should probably focus on work.

They still had time to get under the cap if they matched, so that's not really dropping the ball. Like every GM, especiall the winning ones, he had to make some choices to make regarding his roster. Some were poor, but the Penner situation wasn't one of them.

If they don't have a plan in place that doesn't fall apart if he goes for a walk during his lunch break then we are in much more trouble than I imagined.

Penner was left as an unsigned RFA and vulnerable to offer sheet while Burke headed off for a vacation. And like I said, it is great he is doing all these extra-curricular activities but if he is not doing his job/getting results than it comes off like he is slacking on doing his job.

I think they'll kick Parise's tires, but then the wonky long-term deal will be required and they'll back off.

Wouldn't be surprised to see the Leafs nab Prust or Tootoo, maybe Parros.

I think for sure we'll be in on Marty Brodeur, don't know if that'll bear fruit.

Yeah that worked out awful. Using bits and pieces from that offer sheet, Burke was able to draft Jake Gardiner and Justin Schultz. Boy, he was sure asleep at the wheel that week!

No kidding. The lack of business knowledge among some posters is really laughable.

The plan of attack is well written by this point, and everyone knows what they have to execute. Burke will also have his role, but he knows how to balance these things.

This goes in circles. I will repeat what I already wrote above:
