TSN mentioned Detroit would look at him as a Plan B also.
They've also talked about the Wings having the sort of 'room that can absorb him without issue and push him to be better due to the leadership of their vets. That's not exactly something I see when I look at the Sabres roster.

Leino and Roy are great leaders! Ya maybe they edge us in that department
If the Wings are really out of the Parise sweepstakes, Detroit makes a likely landing pad for him. They need some pop on the wing, have a long history of intigrating European players into their room, have the leadership there (and even the worker bees) who can guide him by word and deed. Seems like a good fit.
Dont want Semin in a Sabres uniform, he would be Leino 2.0... Just without the mythical Playoff Swagger....
What? Semin is a much, much better player than Leino. Three 30+ goal seasons, a 40 goal season, three 70+ point seasons and a career PPG of .87 (which would be the best on the team).
I swear, some people who post on these boards don't watch hockey and just read HFboards and form all their opinions based on the crap people spew.
There are zero similarities between Semin and Leino.
They're European. They're male. They're born just half a year apart in neighboring countries. They both have five letter lastnames, share three of the letters, and the spookiest similarity; the second letter in both lastnames is E.
To say there are zero similarities... God, some posters on this board are so ignorant!

They also said he's a "born loser" and a bunch of other nonsense, so within the context of their conjecture, yes, he would only work on Detroit lest he be cast out to the Island of Misfit Toys in Columbus.
I do think Detroit is a good fit and was my original landing spot for him days ago, mostly because of Datsyuk and not much else. If he plays with Datsyuk everyone is going to be talking about him the way they talked about Kovalchuk this season, after years of destroying the guy for being a soft, selfish loser.
I like Semin. From the really small sample of games I've seen him play, I like him. But then I've always had a soft spot for russian hockeyplayers. The guy can handle the puck and score goals and from what I understand he plays both wings and does it well. I can see him playing right wing with Hodgson and Vanek.
Go fetch, Darcy!
Vanek - Hodgson - Semin
Foligno - Ennis - Stafford
Leino/Gerbe - Someone who's not Roy (Grigorenko?) - Pominville
McCormick, Kaleta, Tropp and Scott depending on current needs and health status.

I can get used to those lines.
I agree with these lines however I would point out that I feel strongly that Leino-Roy-Pommers is a line that can be quite good, so though you very much want Roy out, in a scenario where he is here that line is good in my book. That leaves Gerbe, McCormick, Kaleta, Tropp, and Scott to sort out the bottom line. The problem there is that McCormick is the only one who can play center yet he's the first one I would want to take out (not counting Scott as he won't be in the default line-up). If one could play center, I would love a 4th line of Tropp-Gerbe-Kaleta.
that lineup would get assaulted come playoff time IMO. Top 6 is impressive, but soft and the bottom 6 certainly doesn't make up for.
Because the season is just an 82 game picnic until the 20-something games where everything changes. While it's not without merit, this kind of reasoning is overstated and we're just making a line-up out of the players that are actually here (with singular hypothetical that Semin signs). To address your concern you'd have to invent a line-up based on complex dominoes of maneuvers
I guess the more direct response is that if you take Semin out, the team isn't any less soft but is less good at beating other teams at hockey. Hopefully they would address size and toughness with at least one move afterwards, by moving a superfluous winger or some such.

I agree. I wouldn't be upset if Roy stayed, and with Leino and Pommers, they could eat alot of icetime against tough opposition. It would absolutely not be terrible. My main reason for wanting Roy out, besides that he's never been a favorite of mine, is the fear of Ruff pairing him with Vanek... again. If Roy stays, he and Vanek should stay as far away from eachother as possible.

Still think it would be funny to put Roy on the 4th line:
Vanek - Hodgson - Pominville (VP worked well together last year)
Foligno - Ennis - Stafford
Leino - Girgorenko - Semin (THe Russians with a puck possession guy)
Gerbe - Roy - Kaleta ( Mainly used as a shutdown line but has some quick strick ability)
Since you know.... Ruff likes to use his 4th line as much as his 2nd.

I approve! And the more I think about it, the more I like it.

Roy should not be used as any kind of shutdown center. And I'll leave it at that

That is one tough lineup to play against... What do we have like two guys that hit in this lineup as funny as it would be to put roy on the 4th line

Can anyone explain why they want Ryan instead of Semin? As far as I can tell they both bring the same baggage, but Semin is a lot more talented and we wouldn't have to give up anything to get him.

How do you know they arent trying to get both, Ryan is younger, physical and definately has a lot less bagage too
