Especially if we get past the first round in the playoffs.

Parise and Suter puts us on the free agent destination map big time.

• 11 is the number - 11/11/12 Zach returns to NJ wearing number 11.

• The reality of what happened is just now sinking in - unheard of UFA haul. It's almost like Euro soccer, where you just buy players left and right.

• Reading other teams' going to plan B mode, "trade for Ryan, Nash, etc.", we didn't give up any assets and got two great players. Is this what stealing feels like?

• Like the fact that these guys have local ties, and fit the Wild profile of good character team-first guys.(yeah, I know they just left the only teams they ever played for, but they did it for reasons other than straight up cash, like family, friendship, etc.)

Detroit, I knew they would get neither of the big two... Are in trouble! I see them struggling to even MAKE the playoffs this upcoming season! Even if they sign Carle, no way could he come remotely close to making up what they lost with Lidstrom leaving.

Playoffs without the Wings?

It would be a dream come true!

Some people are saying that because the contracts are front loaded we might lose 1st round picks for a couple of years. Makes me worried unless we cant perform.

We need a flashy title for part two of this thread.

I suggest:

Free Agency 2012 Pt II: Zach and Ryan's Excellent Adventure

the nhl is trying to move away from these types of contracts, which will come up during the negotiations i'm sure, but can't penalize us for anything now.

if we start a second thread, it's going to just be yakking about other peoples deals. the Wild should push the button on cruise control right now.

The contracts the Wild offered were not much different than what other teams were reportedly offering. That's what contracts for big-time UFAs look like in 2012.

Kovalchuk's contract:
- 17 years
- Last 5 years:
----- $550k
----- $550k
----- $550k
----- $550k
----- $550k

Parise and Suter contract:
- 13 years
- Last 3 years:
----- $2m
----- $1m
----- $1m

Cap circumvention in the truest form? Sure. But not in the mold of that rejected NJ deal.

That's what looks to be happening... They were the one team that needed Suter more than us.

Kovalchuk's age in those 5 years you mentioned, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43

Parise/Suter's age in those 3 years you mentioned, 37, 38, 39

That alone is all the difference you need. Furthermore, even if the pay in those years was $525k instead, the team would still be on the hook for $1MM because of another league rule.
