So right here we see evidence of just how much the plan to "do things right" is helping the Jets to retain their FAs... money rules the decision matrix.
What exactly are we losing?
An enigmatic small forward who scores in spurts and disappears
A energy guy who can't keep the puck out of his own net (or clear the zone for that matter)
An aging backup who our coaches didn't feel comfortable enough to play even though they knew they were over working our starter.
The sky is definitely falling. We have already signed one player that is better than all 3. We resigned a critical UFA in Slater.
I mentioned this earlier but I think we could do something around Khabibulin and Enstrom to Edmonton. They get a dynamic puck moving veteran, and they compensate in cap by unloading Khabibulin.
Winnipeg gets a former Jet on an expiring contract who is very competent (if he can stay healthy). The only question is, what do we get for a forward? If the Oilers got Enstrom who knows what they could do next year. With thier wealth up front I'm sure we could get something nice back. If it was one of the kids we would have to add of course but it could work out.

Naw. A pick would probably get Khabi if we wanted him. They just passed on a cheaper old back-up tendy though. Why pass on Mason just to bring in a more expensive version?

But that is the point. The Oilers would get cash relief by moving Khabby here. That is a trade chip we could use.

I think you offer cap relief to get a player you want in return, not for a guy likely available for a pick and who is similar to a player you just took a pass on.

Right, so we take Khabibulin in order for the Oilers to compensate for Enstrom's salary. In a sense it's like we send Enstrom to them + a perk. That should enhance what we get back.

I understand the theory.
I don't think Khabby is the guy they want or need though. TNSE aren't running a novelty show here, no need to bring in a former JetV1. Enstrom will bring more than Edmonton's scraps in return. I don't care if they add Hemsky. Not interested.
I'll give you a huge thumbs up though if it happens.

I certainly wasn't suggesting Edmontons 'scraps'. With 4 premiere scoring youngsters they may be willing to part with one. I am thinking about something bigger.
I also don't think Khabby would be a novelty. Sure, it's a nice story, but the guy can still play if he is healthy.
Either way I don't think there is much chance of it happening. I just think there is a deal there that could really help both teams.
No to Khabibulin because it would signal a rebuild. Since the lockout, his specialty is being the starter for teams out to to tank. From Chicago to Edmonton, Khabi the Rebuilder has been the stoic drunk who can start 50-60 games a year and give his team a chance to draft first overall.

That would be awesome if it occurred. If it was Hemsky though as the +, then a huge no thanks.
What I was trying to say is the mere act of taking Khabibulin's 4.5 off the books this year is a benefit to the Oilers, and thus a bargaining chip in another deal. I don't think anyone would actually give Edmonton anything for Nik considering his contract.

I was saying that the fact that we are taking Khabby off their books means we get a better player in return for Enstrom (basically that Khabby has negative value). I thought that's what you meant.

Am hearing Jets had wanted to get deal done w/ Mason.Currently have irons in the fire for new #2 goalie. Don't panic yet Jets fans
I'm a little disappointed we weren't able to get Glass back, though I expected that he was going to go away. A little surprised by Mason leaving. Didn't expect Goose to stay around. Nice to see Meech back. Interesting signing of Ponikarovsky. Am I all caught up now?
