I think he plans to play another year in Sweden. You never know though. If he impresses, then he impresses.

If Souray is going to play, he had better have had ****ing adamantium injected into his wrists. His shot is worthless if his wrist is still jacked.

Apparently Souray is going to make women lament with his play. Hopefully that means women like Mike Ribeiro and the Sedins, and not Power Players.

Don't get me wrong, I can't really say I like the signing. I read the number and probably thought the same things everyone else did. I'm just doing my usual thing where I'm trying to rationalize what I witness afterwards. And while I'm a little positively suprised how relatively well that works here, I still don't exactly like the signing.

Yeah, that's what I always was thinking since the name was brought up. The thought seemed decent enough, and I think it would not have been too hard to get people behind it had he come $1M cheaper, which would have been fair enough, I suppose.

Souray is a great addition, I 100% approve. Fowler and Getzlaf are going to be feeding this guy 1 timers on the PP all year, he'll hit double digit goals

Right now I'm pretty happy with the D. I hate the Souray term but meh, he does fill that need of needing a shot from the point on the first PP unit and he's nasty as hell. I just hope Lydman isn't moved. Right now our D is better than it was last season, if Lydman is moved it's much worse.

That's just not an intelligent thing to say. The personnel has changed significantly and we'll have to see what it can bring on the ice. Hockey, once again, isn't paid on paper. There have been a lot worse defenses on paper that made it deep into NHL playoffs.

really? which team this year that made it deep did not have an elite defenseman other than the aberration that was New Jersey?

IMO, it's a pretty good defense. Top-4 isn't great, but it's still pretty decent, and we have one of the better bottom pairings in the league. Very tough to play against all around as well.

If this is an assurance that punk like Aliu doesn't get to run Fowler, I'm totally game.

This year? Like you said, New Jersey. These things always get called "aberration" or whatever, but it still happens almost every year somewhere. If you go by not having elite defensemen, I'd also mention Phoenix as I personally don't consider Yandle or OEL (yet) elite defenders. But their defense did already look better than our's on paper and has developed in a very stable system.

If Parros's fate wasn't sealed at that point, that game likely finished off his future with us.

You won't hear me complain. It's one of the reasons I can usually count on you to make a sound argument. You don't necessarily need to be on the Devil's side to be his advocate.

The logic behind that strategy is sound enough, if a bit convoluted. I definitely wouldn't want to see it play out in a playoff environment, but if we even got to that point then something is going right. What do you think? Do you see it with 7 defensemen, using Souray as needed? Or do you go with 6, and either protect the 3rd pairing a bit more, or rotate 5 through, and use Souray as needed? I guess it's way too early to tell, really. In actual practice, that is going to be a decision Souray has a hand in, based on how he plays. Boudreau would be foolish to cut into Souray's ES time if he handles it well. You certainly don't want to rotate through an uneven set of defensemen if you can avoid it. It gets messy, as the pairings don't really stabilize except during the times the normal pairings are together on the ice.

I'm really hoping for a big year from Lydman, Sbisa, and Fowler. Beauchemin needs to get healthy.

Beachemin-Fowler
Sbisa-Souray
Allen-Lydman

Not only is the #1 guy Beauchemin, but it's a bunch of second pairing guys after that. No guys that can shut down an elite line.

I'm sorry, but that defense won't get you deep into the playoffs. Hell, I don't think it gets you into the playoffs. Fowler, Vatanen, and Hiller are gonna have to have huge years if this team has any chance of doing anything significant.

With all the young forwards we have that are cutting their teeth, I don't think a deep playoff run would be expected even if we landed different defensemen.

Most teams can't consistently shut down an elite line. The ones that do usually do it with five skaters focusing on them, as well as the goalie. It definitely doesn't begin and end with two defensemen. You need the forwards to chip in too.
